One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes
on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two
"wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,
arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false
pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and
faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

There is a symbol in Great Plains native systems of the forked tree. It appears in many stories relating something about a child on a journey, often to get water. One fork of the tree is dead, or dying, broken and meager. The other fork is healthy, green, full, alive.

The fork's junction represents the point of choice for people in their journey...the choice to put 'self' first which represents the dead fork, or the choice to put others and community first, which is represented by the healthy fork.

Your relating of the wolf story reminded me of this similar symbol story...

Thanks for relating the story...

That is so true. You are what you maintain a steady diet of. Why is it that the evil wolf is so much easier to feed than the good wolf? Because evil is after our soul to keep us from enjoying the best life has to offer
