Tips on Conserving Gasoline

(NewsUSA) - Despite gasoline prices nearing or above $4 per gallon in various parts of the United States, Americans still fill their SUVs. And most likely they won't cancel their vacation plans for the summer - the season when more people are on the road traveling - because driving there is just more fun.

But as consumers fill up their gas tanks, they may want to consider conservation efforts. According to Mammoth Resource Partners Inc., a Kentucky-based oil and gas exploration company, there are signs that the world's oil production is peaking. Peak oil occurs when half of an oil field's reserves have been extracted, which means it will begin to progressively yield less oil with every passing year until nothing is left.

"China and India are consuming more oil every year to feed their growing economies," said Roger L. Cory, president of Mammoth Resource Partners. "Europe and Japan, which use more oil than they produce, are completely oil-dependent. And the list of countries that are now considered 'net exporters,' which use less oil than they produce, is very short."

These trends cannot continue without consequences. If buying a hybrid vehicle isn't an option for you, there are some ways to make the most of your gas. The American Petroleum Institute recommends several courses of action:

* Get an engine tuneup regularly to improve fuel economy.

* Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflated tires can decrease fuel economy by up to 1 mile per gallon.

* Quit speeding. The faster you drive, the more gas your car uses.

* Use your air conditioning sparingly; it can save as much as 2 miles per gallon.

* Plan your trips wisely. Combine all your trips into one when running errands.

Not only will these tips help you get more out of every tank, they may even extend the life of your car.

I travel a ways for work and kept my AC off this summer except for heavy stop and go traffic and I did see better gas mileage.

Here's some other tips that I have learned and am using.

Accelerate slowly as if you don't have very much power.

Let the vehicle slow down going up hills. Just ten miles per hour saves a lot.

Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. You won't have to touch the brakes as much and speed back up.

Coast up to stop signs and traffic lights. The longer the better. Coasting is free mile per gallon and your brakes will last longer

Clean out your car. The more weight you have, the more power it takes to move it.

Don't add more than 4 pounds air pressure to your tires from what your manufacturer recommends. Check your door jamb or glove box for proper specs. Too much air pressure will wear out your tires and suspension sooner.

There are other tips that I use, but I have more than 30 years of on-track and off-road racing experience so I won't go into them here. Saving fuel will also make you safer on the road. Take care.

read somewhere on the net (maybe a yahoo story), that because cars are aerodynamically designed, driving at normal highway speeds with the A / C on is more fuel efficient, than driving with the A / C off, and the windows rolled down. the drag, with windows down, really cuts down mileage.

the article also stated that pickup box tonneau covers improve mileage.

This is soooo true. I had my trunk loaded down with all kinds of junk. When I finally cleaned it out...I noticed an improved gas mileage!
