I learned today that we may have to say goodbye to The Undertaker forever. The reports say that he was spotted limping from the ring to the curtain, and even though he will never complain about it, he came back from his surgery sooner than he should and he's starting to develop arthritis in his knee. His knees have been an issue for quite awhile, and I think it's nearly time to say goodbye. I think he'll make the decision to hang up his boots at Wrestlemania 25, appropriately, being held in his hometown of Houston, Texas.
I knew this day would come some day, and honestly, I've been mentally preparing myself for it for awhile, but I don't know how ready I really am. Look at it as ridiculous and childish if you want, but The Undertaker is honestly a religious figure for me. I gave up the romantic feelings when I got with Marko, but he will always be a god to me and he will always be a fantasy.
There is a selfish part of me that doesn't want to see him walk back behind that curtain one more time. But I'd rather see that than have to watch him limp around like a pathetic old horse because he's got arthritis in his knee. I can't even imagine that kind of pain.
Mark Calaway has given his life to the wrestling business, from his first days driving all the way from Houston to Austin working for a dollar a night to his losing two marriages and sacrificing time with his three children to his busting up his body numerous times, even during the mid to late 90s. Yes, the business has given back to him...Vince McMahon allowed him to ride in the company jet, his hotels and accomodations are always paid for, he is provided with complete creative control over his character, he has retained his winning streak at Wrestlemania, and he has won the World Heavyweight Championship two times in the last two years. However, as much as it hurts me and probably a lot of other "Creatures of the Night", it may just be time for 'Taker to hang up his boots and take his last walk into the shadows.
What people don't understand is that Taker has always been an important figure in the lives of his fans. We are more devoted than the Hulkamaniacs or the Edgheads. We are the Creatures of the Night, and we'd follow 'Taker to the grave. There is no way that people who do not watch wrestling could possibly understand, but we are the people who watched The Undertaker debut, or if not, we watched him as children later in his career and we were scared lifeless of him but found something about him that we connected with and latched onto and we will never give it up.
This man is an athlete, the athlete above all athletes. Any person who can look me or any other Creature in the eye and tell me that because he is a professional wrestler that disqualifies him from the status of "athlete" that he has so rightfully earned in the span of his twenty year career is entitled to their opinion, but they have never been more wrong. A human being who has broken their body and given up their life for something physical that they do because they love it and because they want to entertain the people who love them is nothing short of an athlete.
If Mark has to go, I want him to go out with all the pageantry that he has been known for since he debuted in the WWF in 1990 at Survivor Series. I want there to be monks. I want there to be fire, and smoke, and lightning. I want there to be a symbol lowered to the ring from the ceiling, and I want there to be a final, grand exit into the shadows. I don't want him to break kayfabe and make some emotional speech, thanking the fans, thanking Vince, and thanking everyone who got him to where he is. I want him to be 'Taker.
From the little kids who cried the first time that 6'10" monster with his funeral director's hat and cloak approached the ring to destroy Hulk Hogan, to the twenty year old girl with his symbol tattooed on her heart...The Undertaker is a god. He is a religious symbol. And his meaning to the wrestling business can not be over or understated.

I will never under people's fascination or passion about wrestlers. Which is fine by me, because they may not understand my passion about watching a ball being dribbled up and down the floor, passed from player to player, then finally landing in a hoop to be what I call "Swisher Sweet".
But I will never call a basketball idol a 'god', because they are not, or will they ever be. That is reserved for only one Deity.

LGQ> I've always enjoyed how you attempt to share your wrestle-mania world with the critters here on MD. I love how unabashed you are in your attachments to it, and your love of the entertainment and its kingdom of wild woolly characters.
I periodically will watch, but I must admit, the role of chairs over the back or head, or thrown onto tables or whatever...I see that as dangerous to a person, and know that isn't always fake blood. But there are some amazing athletes, and I sit and marvel how those big bodies can do the hang time, the flibs, the gyrations, and survive.
One of my most favorite evenings of accidentally watching, I watched as Brock Lesnar and Big Show did a Superplex from the ropes...and imploded the ring!! Lesnar was a wrestler I enjoyed watching as he emerged from being the 2000 NCAA national heavyweight champion, and he was from Minnesota, one of the sister Big Ten Schools. I was sitting correcting projects, sorta watching, mainly not, and I saw those two climb on the ropes and wondered what silly thing was gonna happen next...and ZOW!! I could not believe how those big monster guys did that flip off those ropes! It was incredible!
For a peek...Lesnar & Big Show. The ring frickin imploded with all that weight coming down...almost bounced the ref right out of the ring...great entertainment.
And Taker has been a good entertainer. Sorry to hear that he is aging...which is what all athletes do...age...and limp bent over from injuries suffered in the heat of their games. Good luck with your love of the big guy!

To be injured yet have to face the hands of Big Show at No Mercy tomorrow night leads me to be on your side with this one, LGQ. There is only so much a man can take...and so much a fan can stand to watch. The Undertaker scared the beegeebees outta me growing up...but it has always been respect. And for one man to dismantle "La Familia"...kudos go to him
GREAT blog! GREAT tribute! (You should blog this on wwe.com)

Cool blog...I remember meeting Mark back in the late 80's when he wrestled at Ocala High School under the guise of "Mean" Mark Callous....back then kayfabe was still in and of course being the heel he refused to sign an autograph....he is a tremendous athlete and his accomplishments can't be denied! How about the Hell In The Cell Match with Mick Foley? Classic!
Hereos come and go...mine was Foley, Stone Cold and The Rock who had to be one of the best on the stick! Of course old school wrestlers would be the Road Warriors...Bret Hart, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Andre the Giant!

I'm standing by my use of the word "god". I'm not religious, so I don't believe in your god. So the word doesn't have the same meaning to me that it does to you. So you can get up my ass about it but I'm still going to use it.

Professional wrestling is fake and its only value is for entertainment purposes. I must admit though that some of it is good entertainment. As far as Legacy's comments about old school wrestlers, my version is of course different because of my age. Old school to me means The Crusher, Mad Dog Vashon, Vern Gagne, Nick Bockwinkle, Dr. X, Larry the Ax (formerly known as Prretty Boy Larry) Henning, and the like. That was back in the days of the AWA and I still think they put on a better show than the junk they have now days.

If the Undertaker incited you to know full, complete and involved passion, he gave you a great gift. Once you know that, you can take it to other parts of your life.
Passion also draws other passionate people, something the tepid intellectualizers will never understand.
He indeed deserves a grand finale.

The Undertaker threw Rikishi off of a big cage.
