It was 1 a.m. when I finally put my paintbrush down and admitted to myself it would be a few more days until the laundry room was back in order. I needed to work the next day so I said goodnight to my son . "Don't forget to call Grandpa tomorrow." he said as he waved from his driver's side window.
My sons respect and admire their grandfather, a retired businessman, in his late 80's. Dad is doing well, a few signs of aging-- a little hard of hearing, a few aches and pains in the joints --but all-in-all in pretty good health. He remarried in his 50's to a woman who loves to chatter.
So today I called my father . "Hi Dad, it's me "Cookie", how's it going?"
"Cookie is that you?" I could hear the t.v. blarring in the background. "Turn that down, Heidi will ya, it's Cookie." "So whatcha been up too Cookie?"
"Well, Dad I've sure been watching the stocks this past week. "
"Washin your socks are you. Well that's good, why I remember my ole buddy Skegack Winkler," he said with a chuckle," that guy used to wear his socks one day and turn 'em inside out the next to get another days use out of 'em."
I smiled to myself and wondered if he had his new hearing aid on.
"So what else you up to Cookie?"
"Well, Dad, I am reading about Kuan Yin. It's about..."
A laugh came out of Dad before I could finish. "feeding Kuan Yin, he said, is that what you named that new cat?" "Heidi loves animals you know, she's been wanting a new cat. She's has been helping the neighbors when they go on vacation by taking care of their animals."
I scratched my head and realized he thought I said feeding not reading. I smiled to myself and wondered if he had on his new hearing aid.
"Let me put Heidi on, she wants to talk to you."
So I asked Heidi if Dad liked his new hearing aid.
"Oh yes,"she said,"he wears it all the time. It is just great. He turns it way down and he can read and not be bothered by the t.v. and my chatter." I laughed, now I understood. Dad doesn't always use things in the conventional manner.
About 30 minutes later, Dad came back on the phone to say goodbye. "you take care now Cookie, and by the way, you should keep an eye on the stocks; With this economic package, things are a bit in turmoil."
"Thanks Dad, I will do that, love ya"
Ironically today, I am still not done with remodeling the laundry room so I needed to wash out some socks.
