Trying To Win The Debate With Insults

A blogger recently called me a nutwing. Why? Because my views are different then his.

So why is it that some people feel the need to insult others who disagree with them? Can't they have a discussion and keep it civil? This happens a lot in the political blogs. Both sides are guilty of this. Democrats belittling/insulting Republicans and vice versa. Yes, I write some political blogs that some people disagree with. And yes some people disagree with my thoughts. But I feel the best way to get my point across is to keep the conversation civil. For one, it is best to show respect to everyone. Realize that not everyone is going to have the same thoughts as you do. Secondly, when you keep the conversation civil, people are more prone to look at what you have to say with an open mind rather then if you start insulting them and then they resent everything you say.

Now when this person called me a nutwing, it seems like a harmless little name calling. Trust me, because of my blogs I have been called a lot worse. But if you notice, when name calling and insults enter the conversation no matter how little they seem, the conversation usually turns hostile. And if your intentions were to convince the other person that you are right, you failed. Instead, all you did was insult that person and probably ticked them off.

We are all adults here, lets try to remember that and act like it.

I noticed that too about the blog you are talking about. I don't waste my time commenting on blogs like that. The main reason is my momma always told me to never argue with a fool in public because the one passing by can not tell which one is the fool.

So, if I disagree, I try to do it with grace and let the person keep their dignity. But then, I don't know a whole lot, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut and go on.

There are Doctors and studies that say when people fight and run out of true facts to back up their side they resort to name calling. I once attended a class on this in college as well. I'm always in for a good debate if you can back it with facts that are true, but you will always loose me and loose my respect when the name calling starts as I think at that point you must have no more to say. At the point when name calling starts, the person becomes shallow and empty and has no facts that are true to back what they say, so therefore they throw false slurs and accusations. Hense they loose the debate and others can see this and should take note for future reference. tc Lost

The forums are full of that behavior, which is why you see the same few people there every day. A room full of people trying to see who can scream the loudest about someone who neither knows them or cares about them. Every once in a while someone will screw up and let out a coherent thought, but then it's right back to the childish behavior.

And if your intentions were to convince the other person that you are right, you failed. Instead, all you did was insult that person and probably ticked them off.

Absolutely. Which is why I can't see myself voting for McCain or Obama in this election.

I agree there.
Insults and name calling usually go hand in hand with false facts, manipulation and lies.
I say ignore the guy and let his blogs wither and die from inattention.

The blog in question defies any rational thought.

Our soldiers are the best in the world. They deserve our respect and gratitude. If not for our soldiers idiots would not have the right to post non sense like that.

I am sure that in WWII there were many enlistee's that had shady pasts. So what.

The Military has done more good for men that have lost their way than any prison or freakin social worker. The Military teaches discipline, respect and basic decency.

I for one admire any gang banger that chooses to change his life by enlisting and doing something good for society.

Using this as an excuse for surrendering a War is just plain ignorant.

The blogger deserved to be called names as do other cowards like him.

jayej - There is a big difference in thinking that someones comment is idiotic and calling that person an idiot. Many people think my comments are idiotic too and they tell me so. That is fine. If they think my comments are idiotic and want to tell me so I have no problem with that. Now if a person calls me an idiot because of that comment they think is idiotic, that is a different story. I am surprised you don't see the difference.

Now see Vinny, you made some good points. However I think your good points get lost when you make a comment like that. Keep it civil and you will get more people to listen to what you have to say.

I will keep this short...you my friend are not the problem...maybe this nut will soon go away like some of the rest of the ilk...or at least crawl back under the rock it came from, like the others, who do appear from time to time...words do not a patriot make...semper fidelis

I think a strange thing comes over some people when they turn on the computer, their mental age range drops years in seconds!

Ive had people disagree with my comments often, but thats their right to free speech, but being hostile loses my respect instantly.
