Many single parents these days are having to work extremely hard just to survive. They just don't have the time to carefully monitor what ideas are being put into their children's heads by teachers, books and their peers. In particular, they assume that schools have educated experts, who know best what books should be used in the classroom. This is not necessarily the case. Native Americans know first hand how distortions of history in textbooks work their way into cultural values. Very frankly, much of what textbooks say about the culture of the "moundbuilders" when contacted by the first Spanish invaders is caca de toro. made up by professors in the late 20th century, who printed assumptions without doing adequate research. That is one of the primary reasons that Creek Nation's leaders have been funding a wide range of research and textbook writing projects over the past five years, so that Americans can have an more balanced and accurate understanding of our ancient civilization's cultural heritage.
Well, you say that's fine for getting American Indian trivia correct, but my family is Irish and Swedish heritage, what does that have to do with us?
The problem is that special interest groups from left to right intentionally worm their "people" into school boards, or positions where they can either write textbooks or have control over textbooks. The situation is now worse than ever because of political action groups and mega-churches, but the problem has always been around. I remember having an environmental psychology textbook at Georgia Tech that urged all children should be placed in communal nurseries after being weaned and completely separated from their parents, so that their personalities and political attitudes could be manipulated. I refused to go along with this extreme form of Communism, and so the professor gave me a D. Fortunately, it was only a 2 hour course.
Just recently a former client, who is also a Georgia Tech graduate, asked to meet with me. He had pulled his children out of public school here, because . . .gotta say it . . . their classmates were so stupid and constantly harassed kids who wanted to learn. He enrolled them in a Southern Baptist sponsored school in another county. The graduates of this church-sponsored school consistent do well on college entrance exams. Also, his family is Baptist. Boy was he in for a shocker.
He showed me their American History textbook. It was soft-bound document published by Lifeway Christian Resources of Fort Worth, TX. which is the official publisher of the Southern Baptist Convention. In the chapter on the founding of our country and early history, the text states twelve times that democracy is the cause of the moral and economic decline in our country. It distorts Old Testement Bible verses to interpolate that God has ordered our country to be ruled by a Council of Twelve Elders. The book does not say who would appoint these elders, but I assume they would CEO's of various oil and defense related industries.
These statements are made over and over in the chapter in an obvious effort at brainwashing. I don't even have time in this blog to described the crap in the book concerning the 21st century. Well, duhh-h-h, the ancient Hebrews also had slaves, multiple wives, concubines, and stoned you to death for eating lobster or chicken & dumplings. Did they mention that also? No!
His particular church started looking closer at the crap coming out of the publishing house in Fort Worth, and is seriously considering joining the American Baptist Convention, so they can get back to their Baptist roots of separation of church and state. My blog just had a couple of examples, but you can see why you should read what your children read. Young minds can be easily poisoned by the clever words of the Dark Side.

This is a perfect example of when Sarah was asked to check out four books that were in the public school system to see if they should be pulled or not, it was her duty to do so. Some complained, but someone needs to stay on top of what is being taught to our children and I am glad that someone does. Thanks for reminding us that this stuff happens. tc Lost

Absolutely! Keep watch over those books. The efforts to poison children's minds come from every direction. Religious sects and alternative lifestyle groups plant books that attempt to make their way of life attractive. Moslems plant books that want you think that the Moslems really don't want to change our culture to mimic their dysfunctional one - etc.

I have to agree with you. Since my kids have been going to school I have found many times that the teachers opinions are taught(religion) instead of the facts. I think the one thing that bothers me the most is that in the primary level the school board refuses to expose the children to the theory of evolution. So I do it. At the high school level it is touched on for only one or two days. What is funny to me is I know of a baptist minister that disagrees with the theory of evolution, but I have heard him, with my own ears, refer to certain ethnic groups as apes. What is that all about?
I learned a long time ago that I have to read my 8 year olds lessons with him, and all too often explain the oposite side of the lesson to him. The text books they use now are not the same ones they used 10 years ago when my oldest son was in the 3rd grade. The facts are twisted, and too often the teachers are silenced. Teachers here are actually fired for teaching the truth about the holocost(sp) Parents don't want their kids scared by what happened then, so they go to the school and complain. The end result is that one more important lesson is removed.

When teaching students about the expansion of the west in the 1800's, textbooks glorify the Buffalo Trains, but forget to mention that the Native American's food source was being wiped out so they would be weak from lack of food. It also reminds me of the disease infested blankets that were supplied, to help kill the Natives by germ warfare.
