If you are driving a vehicle and drinking a beer at the same time, do you actually care about yourself or others? Samething goes for anyone who drinks alcohol and then gets behind the wheel of a car. I don't understand why people who know they are going to drink don't prepare for it. Too many lives are lost or altered from this lack of judgement, yet it keeps happening.

This is what I call a selfish and careless crime. It is just a shame that this keeps happening and yet nothing is done about it. But we should do something about it. It just seems odd to me that people can go to a public place, get hammered, and then be able to go to their car and drive.

I am thinking that maybe all places that sell large amounts of alcohol must be required to give breathalyzer tests to all its patrons before they leave. If they fail then prevent them from driving. Or it at least require that there is a designated driver. It might sound crazy but it is a thought of mine. Imagine how many lives that would save. I am surprised that it is not a bigger issue for our local politicians. I am sure that most of us have all been touched by this tragedy at least once in our lives in one form or another, lets do something about it. I know you can't stop it completely, but stopping some of it is better then stopping none of it.

In my youth...and im talking in the middle to late 70s.....we use to drink and drive all the time....had beer iced down in a cooler in the back seat....on the weekends.....we drove 40 miles to ohio from indiana so we could drink legal.....even though we were not of age yet......more times than i can remember....i drove us home......friends passed out in the car......and me...driving home with one eye open and the other one closed.....too much double vision going on back then.....and i always got us home....and alive.....and that was one fact i was always proud of.......that is...until i got older......and the laws changed.....and then i realized that what i thought was just fun....was really stupid.....and with the birth of my kids......i just put it all away......now sometimes when we camp....and i know im not gonna be driving...ill drink.....and ill enjoy it....but then...i think about how easy it would be to just fall back into drinking again...and to be at the wheel of a car......and if im real lucky...get stopped and go to jail...before i hurt somebody out there.....but then...the thought of going to jail....some place ive never been before scares the hell out of me enough not to start drinking again....call it growing up.....or just common sence........cookie.

Such a senseless crime and the victims pay such a high price More people need to take a stand against it

believe in mich there is a law that a bar that sells liquor to a patron that puts that person over the legal limit, is legally responsible for any harm that person does. every once in a while there is a lawsuit regarding this, probably paid for by the bars liability insurance. but, usually the bars just continue playing russian roulette.

if society really wanted to eliminate drinking and driving they would do away with bars that just sell liquor (no food), and limit the amount of alcohol that bar / restaurants could sell with food. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, we know this isn't going to happen, EVER.

A while back, I used to drive from Tampa to New Orleans and back to Tampa, once a month. I doubt if there were five times in as many years that the drive was not made under the influence of a couple of six packs.

I had or caused no accidents. I had no problems. I just drove, and drank, and occasionally picked up a hiker for conversation . I also occasionally repaired that old Chevy van, drinking while I did so. Again, no problems.

A drunken fool will still be a fool when he sobers up, and a careful driver will always be careful, even when drinking.

I drove with a beer in my hand for years, the whole trip and never an accident, not one. But then I am a careful man and seldom have any accidents in or out of cars, drinking or not.

There must be some other factors involved in the accidents, other than some moderate drinking.

A sweet, loving awesome young teen was killed the other nite here in my town...his friend was drinking, and now charged with vehicular homicide.

Now the dead boy's family's lives are ruined...as is the life of the 16 year old driver and HIS family.

Senseless.....

You won't think that the day your drinking and driving causes an accident and you wonder how you got to where you are.

I thought it was so stupid when my state closed the package stores down, but left the bars open. I think there should be no alcoholic drinks served anywhere that you have to drive home. If you must drink, go home and drink; why a person is allowed to drink then get on the road is unbelievable to me.

Now, of course, where I live is wide open country, it's 4 miles of winding hilly roads to the nearest bar for me. I can see in large cities where people walk, take the bus, a taxi, a subway...... whole different scenario.

When I was 16 my Mother and her boyfriend were driving under the influence. They thought they were always careful. Well, guess again. They were on an interstate and a car pulled out of a gas station. Their reaction time was off due to the Jack Danials consumed eariler. Mom died that night and left me and my brother and sister without a parent. Her boyfriend has to live with the guilt. And I thank God, they didn't take anyone else with them.

Defender, I'm glad you grew up.

My friend took his semi on a one day run to chicago. His wife took the little girl to kindergarten that morning at 8 AM. The three year old and the baby were in the car. A drunk driver T-boned her at 80 miles per hour on a city street. My friend left home a famliy man. He came home to a dead family. If you have one beer and drive you should go to jail. I'm sorry Tom, as much as I admire your writing and your philosophy, you just haven't been caught by circumstances yet. your driving is impaired whether you've paid the price yet or not.

The technology is there to put breathelizers in all autos. In the end, though, it's only strength of character that will prevent a drinker from driving. That's something that will always be in short supply. So there is no solution to the problem except suffering and death. Sorry to be so morose.

If you are driving a vehicle and drinking a beer at the same time

Take care not to spill any.

Drink drive is a 'no no' in most of the rest of the world.

I am surprised that the US is so far behind on this.

Here is an additional comment that a member wanted to add.

Upon further consideration, I point out that my comment was about my personal experience only, and two decades ago.. I also add that my speed motto is "barely alive at 55", and I park and retire to the bed in back of the van when appropriate. Perhaps that is why I have a 50 year record of driving motorcycles, cars, boats and trucks, with zero accidents.

I don't encourage or condone drinking while driving as a general practice, or for other people, or even any longer for myself. I think drunken drivers deserve jail the first time, and drinking accident drivers deserve long jail times and far stiffer fines.

Yours, Ttomtarr
