For some reason my younger son is obsessed with the Army. He wants Army video games, Army clothes, Army toys, and longs to join up when he's old enough. I do have to get a little proud when I hear him on the playground with other children, telling them Army stories, and saying, "What? You don't care about the Army? They save our butts!" He can get quite enthusiastic about it.

This is a picture he drew yesterday.

He said, "Look, Mom, those guys are saying bad words."

After I picked myself off the floor from laughing, we had to have a talk.

"Now, T, you know you aren't supposed to use bad words. We've discussed this before".

"But, Mom, guys cuss in the Army."

"It doesn't matter. You are only a little boy and I don't want you using or writing those words."

"OK, Mom".

Thinking the matter was dropped, we got in the car to go to the store.

"Mom, I have some information for you".

"What's that, honey?"

"I hope you know that when I get into the Army, I'm going to cuss.....a lot. I'll probably do it in training".

Where do they get it from??

My 17 year old nephew is chomping at the bits to join the army guard. I am not signing for him just yet.. My question is how do you know they really know what they want at 17?

the universal military training act of 1947 drafted everyone as
we were being invaded from outer space. that's when the
earth was 'together'. bring back the draft, and don't allow
deferments for anything. no college deferment bullshit.
or any other kinda bullshit deferments. i don't care
if you are a quadrapalegic, you're in the army now.
and stay in forever. world militaries unite, defend planet earth.
milky way galaxy under attack? buzz lightyear of starfleet command. lol.

Maybe precious, but tragic too.

The TV and media portray war as another sport. They don't show people writhing as they slowly die, or the streams of blood gushing from a severed artery. The reality is not such good fun, just the guys being tough together like media soldiers.

If he is hot on the Army, get him a bag of candy and take him to a VA hospital to hand out to some of the vets who don't get to see kids much, or maybe don't see at all. They will be kind to him, and perhaps he will come home with a more balanced view of military life. The vets will appreciate your visit too.

Some will say he is too young for such a visit, but the same ones obviously don't feel he is too young to get programmed to shoot people. What your son has needs a strong antidote.

I think my Mom suffered more in my military career than I did, and both were changed for life

Good luck .

Trust me mom he will cuss in basic. It starts the minute he steps of the bus and wonders, "What the HELL have I gotten myself into?"
Great blog though. Brought back memories of my younger days. Before military life.
