one day last week at 2 am, like most every day of the week, i turned on a program called, "poker after dark." instead of the usual format of a short-seated (six players) tourney, it was a cash game of "high rollers." included in the group, was the granddaddy of hold-em, doyle brunson. his life story is fascinating, at least to me. raised in texas, he was an athlete who might have turned pro, iffffffffff he hadn't injured a knee. he graduated from college, took a normal job, and played poker on the side, until he realized he could make more money in one night of poker than a month, working a "normal job." he had a major health issue, recovered, had a daughter with health issues, and turned to poker full-time to pay off his medical bills. in the early days, he often says, "being robbed was the dangerous part of the job. i've had guns shoved in my face, my life threatened." he survived. so, last week, he made this comment--- "poker players don't suffer from insanity, we enjoy it." ... ... i agree... ...
