A couple of months ago, I blogged about My Poor Aching Foot. I'd planned to follow up that blog soon after I had a procedure done on the foot...and more time than I realized has passed.
On September 12th, I had an in office procedure done that is called "extra-corpreal shock wave therapy." I can't tell you exactly how it works, but it's been like magic for me.
I arrived at the doctor's office, where he probed my heel for the most tender areas. He then marked those areas & injected a general anesthesia in two places. A few minutes later, I was taken to the room where the machine was located. It was nice & cool in there, thank goodness, as I could feel the sweating bullets coming on! I was sat in a surgical chair, instructed to lay back & turn on my left side, tuck my left leg/foot under my right leg. A pillow was placed under my right knee & my right foot was placed on the orb of the machine.
I never did ask what produced the shock, but assume it was electrical. The machine had a ultra-sound machine built into it & the wand was focused at all times on the inside of my heel. The "shock" was started rather slowly & built up. The operator asked if I was okay & if I was going to be able to "take it."
I hate to complain & try to be a good patient, customer or whatever I am involved in....so I told her "if this is all it's going to be, I'll make it." She turned the machine off. We were just getting started. The doctor came in & put another injection in my foot. As my foot was placed on the orb with the inside of my heel area laying on it, I could feel the shock exiting my foot on the outside by my ankle bone. As I indicated discomfort in that area, the operator placed her thumb on the area & put specific pressure on it which helped alleviate the discomfort. The entire procedure lasted between 20 & 30 minutes.
I was given post-procedure instructions, along with a 'script for darvocet & sent home. I kept the foot elevated & iced it down periodically for the remainder of the day...and yes, being the wimp I am, I took a couple of those darvocets.
I was absolutely amazed the next day how much improved my foot was! I returned to the doctor in 2 weeks, was given permission to walk for exercise up to 20 minutes every other day & continue as I have been. I am advised to continue wearing my running shoes with inserts & am doing so. Healing is to continue for 5 - 6 months out from the treatment.
On Thursday, the foot really got put to the test as I went to Raleigh & spent the day at the state fair. We arrived about 11'ish & started heading out of the fairgrounds at 8. I was exhausted...my foot was squealing & I was so happy when I got home & was able to put it on ice!
I've recuperated from the fair & now I've come down with a yucky, yucky bad cold, I guess it is. It started last night with an awful sore throat. Today my neck has been ouchy & my head is stuffy, now I'm getting sneezy & itchy. *sigh* I'll get over all this soon enough.
So that's it for my update. Sorry if you were bored. Frankly, I am just sick to death of all the political mumbo jumbo & the "my opinion is the only one that counts holier than thou attitudes" around here. I just decided to add a mundane bit of my boring life here.

I completely sympathize with you on the gimpy foot. I also had plantar facitis, but had surgery back in 2000 to have the heal spur removed. I still have issues with that foot, but no more heal spur....it's just weaker than the other foot and the heal where he made the incision gets terribly dry and cracks. Oh the price we pay. They didn't even offer that treatment that you talk about back then.

I'm happy to hear the treatment was successful. Surgery in most cases is the last resort.
