Originally, I felt sorry for John, a tortured Vietnam POW veteran who had been captive for more than 5 years. I started doing more research on John McCain this week and found that he has limited use of his arms as a result of the brutal torture he received from his captors. Actually, I kinda knew about the disability but I didn't know, since his release, McCain has been receiving the maximum disability benefits. He claims 100% disability.
Now you and I know, he's NOT totally disabled. Here's a 72 year old 'Maverick' running for President of The United States who recently hiked the Grand Canyon and vowed to "Out-campaign" them all.
Well John, you seem to be doing a pretty good job. Your 2007 income tax disclosure claimed tax free $58,358 benefits you are still receiving from the government and your net worth is estimated between $21-$32 MILLION. Wikipedia claims you and your wife's combined net worth estimated to be $100 MILLION.
Certainly that puts you as the perfect figurehead to represent middle class hard working Americans.
Or does it?
Before someone gets personally offended by my comments... this blog really isn't about McCain running for president, his leadership, foreign policies or how he hushed-up the media for disclosing the Freddie Mac money trail to his campaign manager Rick Davis earlier this year nor his past and present associations with crooks and terrorists who he claims to be friends with. Not important right now...
I WANT TO SAVE THAT FOR ANOTHER BLOG.
But if you are interested, I know I cannot vote for a man who runs a smear campaign and continues to run untruthful/misleading ads against his running mate the way John's campaign is run.... but I'll stop with that subject simply because this blog is focused on John McCain the person and not his political platform.
John, are you or are you not totally disabled... and which side of moral fence are you standing on?
I'm sure I can go downtown and find a dozen or so homeless Vietnam Veterans missing limbs lost in the war not collecting a penny in disability, who are sleeping on beds made from cardboard and forced to crouch under the ramps of the expressways when it rains. These are the ones who stand on street corners holding out signs begging for handouts.
I saw a YouTube video yesterday of a young soldier who lost his leg from fighting in Iraq... It was amazing the tale he told of how much hate he has for your political opponent and how much he believes in you John McCain the war hero. I was saddened to see him in his prosthetic leg, I'm sadder knowing you're a multimillionaire wearing $500 shoes collecting $50,000 tax free dollars a year when soldiers are coming back to America only to find the president who sent our troops to war doesn't have the budget to give these men and women the medical care they so desperately need.
I'm trying to keep politics out of this blog John but in my mind I can only see your supporters booing when talk about your opponent having said "Spread the wealth around" It's almost like extras in a movie that boo and cheer on command. It's obvious you don't like spreading the wealth around John, so maybe the boos are more appropriate toward you.
John McCain... if you're so much for America and the military that defends us, do the right thing. STOP ACCEPTING DISABILITY BENEFITS. This is money you don't need and cannot possibly spend in your lifetime. It's morally wrong to accept this money and claim you're healthy enough to run this country. Think about the soldier missing an arm or leg, unable to work, behind in his mortgage, 2 needy kids and a wife working 2 jobs to keep a roof over their heads. I cannot say it any clearer John. Do the right thing... not only for America but for yourself.

now correct me if I am wrong......Mc Cain is retired from the military........and draws his retirement pay......at the time he retired......you could either draw retirement or disability........but not BOTH......I know there was talk lately of allowing disabled vets to draw both retirement and disability but do not know what happened to that bill........as a vet who draws disablity........I did not set my disabilty rating...the VA did.......I do not know how much a 100% rating draws......but I am guessing that his retirement pay exceeds that of a 100% VA payment........and its his wife who has all the money...not him.......and I do remember him sayin that they always file separately since they were married........guess he got lucky marrying such a HOT rich woman......lucky bastard

I picked up bits and pieces about this from different websites to see if everyone had the same (or similar) story. I believe it was disability all these years and not retirement.

As far as the street corner vets most are fakes how do I know I work with the homeless as far as him being rich that's not a crime that's the American dream as far as spreading the wealth why don't you post how much McCain and his wife have donated to charity over the past 5 years vs obama and wife do you donate and spread the wealth around. I do. Over four hundred thousand in the past five years maybe we need to stop all the B s and all work together as Americans and help take care of our own so we don't have to have all the goverment welfare programs

Truth be told he has full rights to collect. Yes he does... and though he gives to charity, I'd like to to see him refuse THAT MONEY as a proper gesture for the man who's fit enough to run this country.
As far as the street corner vets most are fakes how do I know I work with the homeless Agreed.. many are fakes. Most? I cannot say. I do have a friend who is a local radio talk show personality who devotes countless hours to charitable events. He's 'down in the trenches' and claims many are genuine homeless vets not receiving benefits.

So why did you have to bring up 'that other guy and his wife' ? This is blog is about McCain accepting $50,000 tax free when it could go to 'several' who really need it... the gist of the blog is where does he really stand with disability?

I will make one comment about John McCain. He is intitled to his money. Having both legs broken and both arms broken, I feel for him as the weather changes. He must almost be a drug addit. I cannot say how the breakage happened, but poping out of a fighter at about 400 miles per hour is not a pleasent thing. First, when you hit the juice--your balls are driven into your throat, then the on rush of the air tears at your body-usually rips your face mask off and leaves the face looking like a defeated boxer. If you do not hold the arms and legs in, the wind will break them. Ypou are also driven against the seat with such force that your rib cage is either brused or ribs are broken.
There were many pilots who went down that were able to fly again in as little as two weeks. So pilots who do not listen--do get hurt because of their own stupidity.
Yep your balls and ass is sore for quite a while too.
So, I have no problem with McCain getting his deserved money.
As far as the comments on spreading the wealth is just a figure of speech. We have a graduated tax code and the investors--stock market boys who have the tax loop hole will start paying their fair share.
It is amazing why Americans will not read or do not have the ability to read and wait on others to tell them what, when and where to do.
What I have problems with is his assisting the enemy during his pow time.
Then at the same time there was GW Bush who's daddy had not only bought him his degree but a spot in the national guard and he could not finish that with honor.
No To me McCain is not a hero--the heros are the ones that took the ass whipping and kept their mouth shut--now that those are friends that I can look up too.
For me, I will vote Obama and Biden

My comment is simply to commend you on the fashion in which you've presented the information you have found in your research. You are not derogatory to the Senator, nor any of his supporters. If everyone presented their views or findings in such a manner, people might have learned more from reading the political blogs here.

Kentuck, since we weren't there... we have no idea of the torture John had to endure.
I've seen some anti-McCain websites supported by ex-military and what they have to say (about him) ain't too pretty.
He's in the history books as a war hero... So, let's just leave it at that.

By law...sounds like he is entitled.
Be deed...sounds like he is entitled.
But by need...if what you say is true...the need is not there.
But that is our lives isn't it...opportunity is often self-focused.
I'd be more interested to compare those numbers with his voting record on veterans benefits. Since I know my Republican WWII vet left the Republican party because of Bush's relationship to vets and benefits, it would make me curious to follow it up with such research. But I have no idea what I would find. It could be the 10% when he resisted party direction, or the 90% when he didn't. Don't know...and too tired to look.
And since I already voted...it's not the kind of thing that would have had impact on my vote. For my world, his world simply does not and cannot work, disability payments or not.

Agreed... he really doesn't need the money. It would make for an awesome gesture to insist the (tax free) money go to someone (or 2 people for that matter) who is/are actually needy.

People need to make up their minds, either support war vets or not. Or maybe if you break just one arm with little pain, or both arms with much pain what do you deserve. Or if you end up with mental disease as a result of the war, and not just bad memories or dreams. If it caused divorce and loss of family is that worse than loss of limb. Lets separate each aspect of the war and pay accordingly ok? Give me a break people, war is war and it's effect has been devastating to all including families and they should be compensated no matter what. Just because they "seem" ok and are walking around, doesn't mean there is no internal injury on our soldiers. Lets not be so knit picky, and be thankful our men continue to keep us free. tc Lost

I don't have anything to add at this moment, other than the fact that I very much appreciate the caliber of your Blog, chat, and also the caliber of the replies that I have read so far.
There is so much more to be learned when there is civility and respect in what we write. For me, I have no comment on who is right or wrong for the office, I have not voted yet....but, I know it is my responsibility to do so and I will.

I've been very busy, so I asked a friend to research this. Without hesitation, my response was... expect to find most of the 'charitable' donations to go to his wife's charity.
