This has to be one of the saddest things I have come across in a while regarding this terrible disease. One I know well as I am a 3rd generation diabetic. My Grand Mother passed from complications from it and my mother today is suffering some health issues also from it.

2 years ago I was diagnosed as being a type 1 diabetic...here is what I have to deal with..

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (called beta cells).

I have to do the daily finger pricking and of course the insulin shots before every meal etc...

If not takin care of...I can suffer from heart disease, stroke, blindness or kidney failure. Fun huh? Just a month or so ago I was hospitalized from having some issues with my diabetes. Is it scary to live with something that can do so much damage? Of course...but with healthy eating, exercise and constant monitoring...I might have a better chance of living to a healthy old age...God willing!

Obesity blamed for doubling rate of diabetes cases

AP Medical Writer Mike Stobbe, Ap Medical Writer – 1 hr 25 mins ago AP

ATLANTA – The nation's obesity epidemic is exacting a heavy toll: The rate of new diabetes cases nearly doubled in the United States in the past 10 years, the government said Thursday. The highest rates were in the South, according to the first state-by-state review of new diagnoses. The worst was in West Virginia, where about 13 in 1,000 adults were diagnosed with the disease in 2005-07. The lowest was in Minnesota, where the rate was 5 in 1,000.

Nationally, the rate of new cases climbed from about 5 per 1,000 in the mid-1990s to 9 per 1,000 in the middle of this decade.

Roughly 90 percent of cases are Type 2 diabetes, the form linked to obesity.

The findings dovetail with trends seen in obesity and lack of exercise — two health measures where Southern states also rank at the bottom.

"It isn't surprising the problem is heaviest in the South — no pun intended," agreed Matt Petersen, who oversees data and statistics for the American Diabetes Association.

The study, led by Karen Kirtland of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides an up-to-date picture of where the disease is exploding. The information should be a big help as the government and health insurance companies decide where to focus prevention campaigns, Petersen said.

Diabetes was the nation's seventh-leading cause of death in 2006, according to the CDC. More than 23 million Americans have diabetes, and the number is rapidly growing. About 1.6 million new cases were diagnosed among adults last year.

Type 2 diabetics do not produce or use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar into energy. The illness can cause sugar to build up in the body, leading to complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and poor circulation that leads to foot amputations.

The study involved a random-digit-dialed survey of more than 260,000 adults. Participants were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor that they have diabetes, and when the diagnosis was made. The comparisons between 1995-97 and 2005-07 covered only the 33 states for which the CDC had complete data for both time periods.

The researchers had data for 40 states for the years 2005-07.

West Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee had the highest rates, all at 11 cases per 1,000 or higher. Puerto Rico was about as high as West Virginia. Minnesota, Hawaii and Wyoming had the lowest rates.

It is not entirely clear why some states were worse than others. Older people, blacks and Hispanics tend to have higher rates of Type 2 diabetes, and the South has large concentrations of all three groups. However, West Virginia is overwhelmingly white.

The report asked about diagnosed diabetes only. Because an estimated one in four diabetics have not been diagnosed, the findings probably underestimate the problem, said Angela Liese, a diabetes researcher at the University of South Carolina.

The underestimates may be particularly bad in the rural South and other areas where patients have trouble getting health care, she noted.

I am a type 2 diabetic and have been for a couple of years now. I have at least 3 friends that have been diagnosed with diabetes in that time frame. It's really disturbing to see this growing trend, as I lost an aunt to a diabetes related stroke nearly 40 years ago....and lost a friend ten years ago, she was only 33 years old and passed on due to diabetic heart failure. My wake up call was when I discovered I had an a1c of 13.0 in September, 2006...I still have problems sticking to a diet that is within the parameters I'm supposed to be, however, my a1c has gradually decreased to 7.1, thanks to changes in my diet and 3 oral medications. I wish you luck in your battle with this terrible disease and hope you have the same type of success I'm having...it takes alot of hard work and discipline.

Mine was at 11.7 or something like that..and the doctor told me in her 8 years of being a doctor...I had the second highest numbers she had seen....I got it to down 5.5....so for now I am safe...*Saying 10 hail mary's"

This is something I think about everyday.
My maternal grandfather lived with & passed from complications of diabetes.
My mom has lived with it for 20+ years now. She also has a brother who has it.
My sister was diagnosed 10 or 15 years ago.
Thus far, I am counting myself lucky.....and I hope my luck continues.
There's nothing you can do but live your life the best you can.

Wishing you well, legacy~

My husband died in 2003 from a heart attack due to diabetes and weighed only 135 lbs. He ate like he should but couldn't control the blood sugars and had to be on a sliding scale of insulin. We never knew from one minute if they were going to be up or down, if he was going to be in a coma or not. It's a dreadful disease and very painful for those who have the added neuropathy that goes along with the many complications. All I can say is God Bless to those that have it and take it serious as it's a very serious disease that does kill you. tc Lost

I too have type1 diabetes and was diagnosed at 7-1/2 years old. I can't deny that it's affected every aspect of my life, including the decision to have children. I don't know what's in store for me because of this disease, but hope and pray one day soon they'll find a cure.
God Bless all who this disease has touched.

Good blog Legacy . It also gives some insight into the high cost of health care. Can't blame the industry, doctors and so on withoutincluding our own contribution to that high cost.

Hope everything goes well with your health.

My uncle recently passed away due to complications of type 2 diabetes. I really applaud your fighting it by sticking to what the dr tells you to do (he didn't). I will say a prayer for your healing!
