I think McCain enjoys being at war. Obama's campaign was one of hope and peace and recognized the need for America to change. I only saw hate mongering from McCain in an attempt to win over the vote of those too racist and stupid to open their eyes and look at this country that has been shaped by old white men.
Old white men have brought us:
hundreds of years of slavery. Slavery was banned in Europe long before it was banned in the US.
The destruction of an entire race of Native Americans.
WWII, when we rounded up all of the japanese americans and stuck them in camps against their will.
The industrial age, where little children worked in factories for twelve hours a day in exchange for pennies to help feed their families.
Ancient history you say? American corporations that have factories overseas pay the workers next to no compensation for long hours. These places make billions of dollars a year--I think they could suffer the profit loss by giving their workers a little more money. No one needs that much money, ever, but they make it by selling 150 dollar shoes that cost less than a buck to make using sweatshop/near slave labor.
We say we are overseas fighting for american's freedom, but all I see is our soldiers invading a country where we are not wanted, to eliminate a people and a religion that we are not comfortable with. How many women and children have we killed? And what for? Oil. I'm telling you now, the war stopped being about 9/11 years ago and now it's a war for oil, and our stubborn refusal to leave well enough alone.
American arrogance claims that we are the greatest country in the world, but how can that be true when everyone hates us? We achieved our greatness by stepping on the weak and the poor. That is not something to be proud of.
America was supposedly founded on the basis of freedom. We live in a country that does not allow 10% of the population to marry who they want to marry, a country that has shown religious intolerance to muslims, jews, pagans, atheists. We live in a country where a large portion of our population wants to outlaw a woman's right to choose her own reproductive rights.
There are worse countries to live in. I know that. I know that we've got it good here compared to the majority of the world. But just because its better does not make it best. In terms of quality of living, the US does not even make the top ten spot. We're 13. The best countries to live in are Ireland and Switzerland. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6529893)
Last night America proved that we are aware that we have problems, and we made the first step towards fixing it. When Obama first joined the race I thought "there's no way he can win--his name is too foreign, people will dismiss him immediately" And I dismissed him as well and focused on Clinton. I don't know if Barack Obama can do what he promises. He might fail as a president. That doesnt matter. What matters is that the american people have proved that they can think for themselves instead of blindly following what they were used to. People who would not have bothered to vote before recognized the need for change and got off their butts and waited in line for hours to have their voices heard. And that is why I'm proud, because for once we've proved that we care about our future and the future of the world.

I hope that people read through your blog, and make the effort to hear (and understand) your perspective. Certainly, some will see a perspective that differs from their own...unfortunately, such differences often engender varying degrees of disrespect.
Thank you for sharing your viewpoint.

Alien: I DID read your entire blog...I always do....I like what you have to say AND the respectful way in which you say it.
I very much agree with what you said and not further comment is necessary. Don't forget, I have traveled worldwide for many years and have seen some things with my own eye!.
I have made myself a promise that I will not continue to rehash old news...and, even if I read some of the threads, I will not reply if there is any kind of bashing going on in them. I hope others understand and feel the way I feel.
You've got a kudo coming!.
Fondly, KK

Like yourself I am feeling quite "PROUD" to be an American today !
You make many excellent points in your blog that are so very true .One cannot argue against them.
However,I must disagree with you on one point you alluded to.
Yes,it was wrong in hindsight during WWII to round up Japanese-American citizens and put them in prison camps however...in the context of what was going on at the time with the Germans and the Japanese making a pact to take over the world with the Germans wanting to rule the Northern hemisphere and the Japanese wanting to rule the Southern hemisphere it is easily understandable the hysteria of that time period about the Japanese after they had bombed Pearl Harbor.
Credit must be totally given to this country because we were drawn into WWII and fought that war on 2 fronts along with our Allies with at least 11 Million Allied Soldiers killed with the Russians suffering the worse losses with 9Million soldiers killed along with over 1 Million Chinese soldiers killed and the US and the UK with 400,000 and 300,000 soldiers killed respectively.
The bottom line is that This country along with our Allies did save the world with the war ending in 1945.
I just had to educate you on that issue so you would know.
In closing, like yourself I am once again proud to be an American and it feels so good !
Power to the People !

WWII was necessary and I do not have any qualms to the fact that America fought in it. Actually I am annoyed that we didnt get involved in the affair much earlier as we should have.
I do not condone paranoia as a reason to lock up 150,000 people based on their nationality just because a few of them *might* be spies.

All we have to do is round up and arrest all the old white men....imprison them....and execute them........all our problems will be solved but............may I suggest you study history and economics and bit further...........and while your at it.....travel the world........and few months in a oppressive country like Suadi Arabia...Iran.....or Indonesia........where all the rights you now take for granted do not exist ........then you can come back and say that no matter who is president.....you are proud to be an american...and if so much of the world hates us why do they so much strive to be like us.......I am proud to be a american.....but I am not proud of Obama.....but I am even prouder of the fact that in 4 years I can do my best to kick his ass out of office...and while your at it....thank a soldier for your freedom

It wasn't all that long ago that women couldn't vote in the USA 1920!!......it has been a slow crawl, but we are getting there!! And for blacks, there was no way to enforce that they had the right to vote til 1965!!
"The first person to vote under the provisions of the amendment was Thomas Mundy Peterson who cast his ballot in a Perth Amboy school board election being held on March 31, 1870.[4] It was not until the Voting Rights Act of 1965, almost a century later, that the full promise of the Fifteenth Amendment was actually achieved in all states. "
Wonderful blog. Thank you!!

Words of an ignorant, spoiled little girl with very little if any knowledge of US history let alone world.Slavery has been around since mankind has been around and any African American should thank god that there an- ceistors were brought here and sufered, because now they have opport- unitys they would not could not even dream of in Africa. Germans were also put into camps,we were in a world war the likes of which had never been seen before-Obama is a Socialist- he is a taker-he will build Nothing. Go live in a socialist country it's the perfect place for someone like you,a non-producer with a big mouth or stay here and get a JOB. This is the GREATEST Country on earth, because of the rites and freedoms of the individual, what is sadly forgotten is the responsiablity for ones self, something I'm sure is foriegn to you. The Bill of Rights-read them-understand them before they take them away. For the perfect spioled little girl-grow up and thank GOD you were born in America. Patriot
