My aunt and I were out for breakfast this morning and she noted people were outside decorating for the holidays. She just moved here from NC this year, so this appeared strange to her. She didn't realize here in Ohio when the holidays approach, we have to think ahead before the bad weather approaches. Who wants to go outside to hang lights and other decorations when it's in the 20's? Not me! So those who like to decorate take advantage of a decent sunny day in preparation of the weeks ahead.
My son always remarks about the way people decorate. Each has his/her own way. As you drive thru the well-to-do area of town, there are landscapers out there preparing the lawns and shrubs with every detail imaginable. This is where you find all the trees and shrubs decorated like something from Home & Garden. Then you go to the area of town known for rednecks, and you see every imaginable piece of decoration - doesn't matter what it is, throw it out into the yard anyway, as there is no theme, just see if you can out-do your neighbor! They don't hang the lights with any care either. My son always referred to them as the "flung" ordeal. Stand back and give them a toss onto the shrub! Of course there are other ends of town that people carefully place their decorations out but attach some kind of chain or safety feature to keep the others from stealing them. I saw one last year with a cute blow up bubble with reindeer going around inside - kids thought it was humorous to make it go flat during the night.
As for myself, I have yet to pull out the decorations for inside the house. I'm not very good at decorating outside with my bad ankles, so a nice wreath on each door is sufficient for me. Last year I had a splint on my wrist, so decorating was very minimal in my newly acquired home, but this year I may expand it a bit. I have my eye on some giant balls to hang across my porch. Yes, being we have a few days of good weather still around, I'll go out and place a few decorations to sparkle up the street in preparation for Santa's arrival.
