. I'm quite overwhelmed....
My son started kindergarten end of August. Since then, there has barely been one week when he didn't bring home, stuffed in his backpack, flyers for me to get my wallet out.
We have now the second all-school fund raiser. We have every so often the Scholastics flyer to buy all kinds of books, DVD's and other stuff. We have had the coin drive for the poor. We have had the school bingo. We have had the fund raiser for the cheer leaders. We have had the fund raiser for the teacher. We have probably had a couple other fund raisers that I don't remember right now. We have had more flyers with more "school" stuff to buy. We have been to the halloween dance that had an entrance fee on it (I wouldn't know for what that was supposed to be used...) We have had the appeal to the mothers to bring snacks for the class...
And so it goes on, and on, and on.... I'm almost scared to open his backpack on Friday evening, because... sure enough... there will be yet another money-making device in there...
Now I guess that's the idea of FREE public education.... .

that's when shredders come in real handy....and you can create your own packing material for when you need it....support what you choose and ignore the rest....

maggie...
Believe me, I don't buy into all that stuff.
But I just can't believe my eyes that public schools are such money making machines, nowadays.... .

If you feel compelled to help out and give,,,,,
just go by the classroom, ask the teacher what she/he needs, and get something off the list.
OR,,,, go easy. Big box of tissues and papertowels. Cold and flu season is coming you know.

And there I thought I had all the classroom needs covered when I carried about 10 pounds of school supplies in, on the first day of school... (including paper towels and boxes of tissues..... since public school can obviously not afford such things off our taxes....)

It's also almost time to sell those Christmas gifts that are overpriced. Then there's the school pictures...and bake those goodies for the Christmas party! I recall those days when my kids were in school - we didn't shred them in shredders back then - we filed them in "File 13" (trash). Wait until the kid grows up and you get hit to join the cheerleading squad or other sport events!! BTW, be prepared to work the concession stand as well.

We have every so often the Scholastics flyer to buy all kinds of books, DVD's and other stuff Those flyers have been around since I was a little girl, but back then the books were $.25-$.50 each. There are still great deals, and I go thru them every time they come home and find all the $1 books and let my daughter pick 5 of them. Where else can you get a brand new book for a buck?
With all the budget cuts facing our schools, I understand the fund raisers. My daughter's brand new high school doesn't even have enough money to heat the swimming pool for swim meets. They have a bowl for football, but no bleachers, so they have to use the rival high school's field for "home" games.
I do agree that's it is out of hand...I'm not a freaking ATM. There is only so much I can do.

Maybe one day, the governments could decide to pour some tax money into the schools....
