Since the election of Obama, I have received quite a few e-mails from my friends in foreign countries, expressing their excitement.

Their hopes are high up that the USA will stop being the international bully they've come to know much too well.

They all say: "finally, it was about time..."
They hope that with the new US president, the world order will be just that: a world order again, not an "USA order" disguised as world order.
They hope on less wars and less unilateral economic dictates from the USA.
They hope on more international cooperation and are eager to get the job started.

All the people I know in foreign countries?
Heck no. My father is a blatant racist and can't see beyond the color of the skin...
just like many Americans can't seem to, either....

A democratic government, a black president..... oh, it will be such a new and exciting time..... for the USA and for the world...

a world order again,

I would take what Europeans say with a grain of salt.
The last 'world' order they tryed was with German in the 30's and 40's. then the Brish Empire, Fench it goes on.

A democratic government

This is not a 'democratic' government.
It's a Constitutional Republic.

That's why the UN was created, and their decisions began to have weight.... until the USA started going solo and wreck the whole idea of the UN....

It's a Constitutional Republic

Of course it is.... I didn't say the contrary....
the "democratic government" refers to the presidential an majority party.... evidently...

179 Wars since our nation was founded that provides a long list to choose from.

We are a Constitutional Republic who uses a Democratic process within our governance of the Republic
DEFINING DEMOCRACY

Government of the People
Democracy may be a word familiar to most, but it is a concept still misunderstood and misused in a time when totalitarian regimes and military dictatorships alike have attempted to claim popular support by pinning democratic labels upon themselves. Yet the power of the democratic idea has also evoked some of history's most profound and moving expressions of human will and intellect: from Pericles in ancient Athens to Vaclav Havel in the modern Czech Republic, from Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence in 1776 to Andrei Sakharov's last speeches in 1989.

In the dictionary definition, democracy "is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system." In the phrase of Abraham Lincoln, democracy is a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people."

Freedom and democracy are often used interchangeably, but the two are not synonymous. Democracy is indeed a set of ideas and principles about freedom, but it also consists of a set of practices and procedures that have been molded through a long, often tortuous history. In short, democracy is the institutionalization of freedom. For this reason, it is possible to identify the time-tested fundamentals of constitutional government, human rights, and equality before the law that any society must possess to be properly called democratic.

Democracies fall into two basic categories, direct and representative. In a direct democracy, all citizens, without the intermediary of elected or appointed officials, can participate in making public decisions. Such a system is clearly only practical with relatively small numbers of people--in a community organization or tribal council, for example, or the local unit of a labor union, where members can meet in a single room to discuss issues and arrive at decisions by consensus or majority vote. Ancient Athens, the world's first democracy, managed to practice direct democracy with an assembly that may have numbered as many as 5,000 to 6,000 persons--perhaps the maximum number that can physically gather in one place and practice direct democracy.

Modern society, with its size and complexity, offers few opportunities for direct democracy. Even in the northeastern United States, where the New England town meeting is a hallowed tradition, most communities have grown too large for all the residents to gather in a single location and vote directly on issues that affect their lives.

Today, the most common form of democracy, whether for a town of 50,000 or nations of 50 million, is representative democracy, in which citizens elect officials to make political decisions, formulate laws, and administer programs for the public good. In the name of the people, such officials can deliberate on complex public issues in a thoughtful and systematic manner that requires an investment of time and energy that is often impractical for the vast majority of private citizens.

How such officials are elected can vary enormously. On the national level, for example, legislators can be chosen from districts that each elect a single representative. Alternatively, under a system of proportional representation, each political party is represented in the legislature according to its percentage of the total vote nationwide. Provincial and local elections can mirror these national models, or choose their representatives more informally through group consensus instead of elections. Whatever the method used, public officials in a representative democracy hold office in the name of the people and remain accountable to the people for their actions.
Then add Liberal Moderate Conservative and strict Constitutionality to the mix and monitor Obama no one knows for sure which he will be.

Funny - President Bush did not bully the LEADERS of 20 nations to come to Washington today.

Who did we bully?

When?

How?

Where?

Most of the leaders of the free world are very close with this administration.

The Europeans have always been envious of Americans. What else is now.

Are any of those people you heard say those things from countries that have ever accepted U S aid? Or countries that now benefit or have ever benefited when the U S has provided security to the seas and other areas important to them?

I for one would like to see the U S step completely out of the role of providing aid or security to any area except our own for a few years. I'll bet a lot of those same people and/or their countries will come begging for some good old U S intervention when they need it.....

My father is a blatant racist and can't see beyond the color of the skin...just like many Americans can't seem to, either.

You don't know what is in people's heart. Besides racism comes in all colors and is in all nations. Why target America?

As far as the U N goes, I would like to see the US out of it.

The first country that comes to my mind... Iraq. Maybe you see it differently.

For whatever reasoning we did it... the world watched AMERICA take down another country.

I suppose you approve of the "Shock & Awe" maximum terrorist attacks those people suffered? I know I was in Shock & Awe and certainly not proud to be American.

What countries do you know of applauded America for being the motiving force to overthrow another country... all the way down to the televised hanging of Saddam Hussein?

Actually, I do know what's in my father's heart.... I lived with him long enough. But you don't...
Why target America? Because I live here.... (besides... my dad does not live in America...)
(and "yes", I'm used to xenophobic remarks like "why don't you go back..." kinda crap.... just in case you thought of mentioning it.... which I don't hope... )

The current administration is known for it's failure to communicate except behind it's closed doors. As I've said befoe...here's to unity & peace. I'd love to live to see it!

Iraq? Over throw? Give me a break. It was long discussed before the bombs flew exactly what we will rebuild, what countries will be on our side, how we will proceed with the Government of Iraq, who will handle the money, the oil, the armies, the police, the prisons, the people of Iraq, writing up the constitution for Democracy, and I could go on and on, LET ME REMIND YOU BEFORE WE WENT TO WAR. So the word invasion and shock and awe is just a joke. or a ploy. The government of Iraq were tucked away nicely in their bunkers when we hit. Did you hear of any important people dieing? Nope, because they knew and agreed to become a Democracy or we'd never have gone there to help them in the first place. No one forced them to go after Saddam, they begged for help and money. They helped in the planning all along, you can bet your boots. They had armies and police forces all in place. If you think they didn't and this was all a surprise to the Government and people of Iraq that we showed up all of a sudden without their permission than you have your head in the sand. tc Lost

They had armies and police forces all in place.

And where would these armies and police forces be now? If they ever existed and were so ready, they sure take an awful long time to take over the direction of their country now.

All that we hear (or what we're getting "fed") since years is that they don't have an army to speak of, that we need to pour in another xxxx billions to help them train an army, and the same for the police force...
Duh....

And then there is stuff like this....

Operation Ajax
http://www.fff.org/comment/com0501i.asp

Operation Ajax
a covert operation by the United Kingdom and the United States to remove the democratically elected nationalist cabinet of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh from power, to support the Pahlavi dynasty and consolidate the power of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in order to preserve the Western control of Iran's hugely lucrative oil infrastructure.

Iran had a democratic government till it was deposed . Mohammed Mosaddeq
