Today was the memorial for another friend. Kathy was a choir bud -- one with whom I blended well. It was always a joy to sit next to her in rehearsals, though we did not get to sing together often in church because she was much shorter than I.
Kathy's birthday was two days before mine. She was 77 last week when I rounded 55. She was from Cuero, Texas which competed with my hometown in Minnesota for the title of Turkey Capital of the World. We had gone to vocal camp in New Mexico together one year and for a time volunteered together in the music library at the church.
She had headed to Branson a few weeks ago on a vacation and wound up in the hospital with pulmonary fibrosis, though at first the diagnosis was pneumonia or COPD or something indefinite... I decided last week that I would go to Missouri to keep her company in the hospital. I decided too late. Kathy had decided that she was tired of the strain of living in her body on this plane.
Somehow, in Kathy's passing, I finally got it that it is not up to me to struggle for the life aof another. I should not cling to any one else's life. If I can lay my hands and offer comfort and relief from pain, I should do so, but life and death is not in my hands.
Kathy left behind a sweet five-year-old dachshund named Sophie. Kathy knew how much my dogs meant to me and I knew how much Sophie meant to her. Tonight Sophie is sleeping in my living room after a couple of hours of trying to engage Henry. It is nice to have new life in my home again.

So very true.
Enjoy Sophie. I am sure she has found another good home.
