The article on the great songwriter Mel Kilgore says that Wolverton Mountain is in Arkansas. Well, we'uns have a Wolverton Mountain right chere in Jawja, so I climbed that thar mountain today with my three trusty herd dogs to photograph the bears thar! The fact that Fox Grapes are sweeter on Wolverton Mountain is very important for all of you in the adult dating scene.
We were 19 degrees this morning, so I reckon Wolverton was about 12 degrees this morning. However, by late afternoon the intense sun made hiking very pleasant, even though the ground was still frozen, and long icesickles hung from the rocks along streams. The big attraction for bears this time a year on Wolverton are the Fox Grapes. They are the wild ancestor of Concord Grapes, but much smaller. However, as the song goes, after a hard freeze, they are sweeter than honey. The bears yank the vines until the bunches of ripe grapes fall to the ground. They are putting on last minute fat just before going into caves to hibernate.
A good time was had by the three canine musketeers and myself. Wish y'all could have come along. On top of the mountain, I got a sun tan because the sky was so clear.
Wolverton Mountain (Merle Kilgore)
They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain, If you're lookin' for a wife. 'Cause Clifton Clowers has a fair, young daughter; He's mighty handy with a gun and knife. Her tender lips are sweeter than honey, And Wolverton Mountain protects her there; The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers, If a stranger should enter there.
All o' my dreams are on Wolverton Mounrain; I want his daughter for my wife. I'll take my chances and climb the Mountain, Though Clifton Clowers might take my life. Her tender lips are sweeter than honey, And Wolverton Mountain protects her there; The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers, If a stranger should enter there.
I'm goin' up on Wolverton Mountain, It's so lonesome down here below; It's just not right to hide his daughter, From the one who loves her so. Her tender lips are sweeter than honey, And Wolverton Mountain protects her there; The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers, If a stranger should enter there.
I don't care about Clifton Clowers; I'm goin' to climb up on his mountain; I'm goin' to take the one I love; I don't care about Clifton Clowers. I'm goin' to climb up on his mountain; I don't care about....(repeating, fading away)..
