Why!?

It's all about communication. The writer intends to communicate an idea. The reader needs to understand it. Certainly, a misuse of "to" or "two", or improper punctuation can usually be decyphered by the reader, it does impede the flow. That is, if a reader is forced to stop to understand a word, or phrase, they are distracted from the concept being presented by the sentence or paragraph.

A dramatic example of the necessity of punctuation:

James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher.

Mostly meaningless, until you punctuate:

James, while John had had "had," had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.

Too many "hads" in this sentence for me. I can not figure it out.

Reworded, slightly...

While John had used 'had,' James had used 'had had.' The teacher had preferred 'had had.'

quite a while ago, the following blog was posted,,, with a pretty good response to playing the game.

emphasis by omission, or not. the other day i replied to someone, in my usual slapstick haphazard attempt at humor. told the recipient to add punctuation as they wished. just fill in the blanks to the following. (((don't___stop___now___ ))) get the meaning you desire, or not...
one of the commentors played along real well, i thought.

(no filling in of blanks and no punctuation.. you get the meaning... or not!!!)

1. Don't stop now!! (followed by soft moaning)
2. Don't! Stop now!!! (followed by a slap across the kisser)
3. Don't stop me now. (followed by unbuttoning of his shirt)
4. Don't you stop that now... (followed by a sexy wink)
5. You don't ever stop ..do you now? (followed by a puzzled look)
6. Why don't you stop that now?
7. I don't know how to stop smiling now! (said after something wonderful whilst most prolly doing this----> )
8. don't stop banging your head in that brick wall now...(cuz that is what ya are probably doing right now, see my responses, heynet Max, buddy??? )

we can change the whole meaning, by punctuating, just a little differently. or not...

Here's another: What is is what is not is not is that it it is. What is, is. What is not, is not. Is that it? It is!
