As soon as you saw the title of my blog, you may have thought, ‘Another don’t buy pets for Christmas yes we know!’ But the fact is, that people WILL buy pets for Christmas, so it’s to them and to the people who you know that may be buying pets this year that I am directing this to.
It is a misconception that there are no pedigree’s in animal shelters, just mutts, mongrels etc. Thousands of pedigree dogs and cats find themselves in pounds, shelters and rescue organizations every year because the owners either decided they didn’t have time after all to care for it, or the pet turned out not to be what they had hoped for.
Let me give you an example of a success story. A Pedigree Boxer, we’ll call her Millie for this blog, was given to a Boxer dog rescue organization because she jumped the fence. The owners left her in the yard every day while they worked, she became bored and tried to jump the fence to go and find some company. She was a sweet and gentle natured animal, she was just lonely. Luckily, Millie was rescued from the rescue centre by no other than Cesar Millan, who gave her to a new home.
There are thousands more like Millie all over the country, they aren’t all Boxers, and they all won’t be rescued by Cesar Millan.
Cats too. Polly was a pedigree Burmese cat, she was given to the pound because she scratched the furniture and couldn’t get used to her litter box. Instead of obtaining training advice she was simply given away to the pound. She was eventually adopted a week before she was due for death row by a young couple who fell in love with her on the spot.
Mutts mongrels etc also have a need for a new home.
30,000 animals were destroyed in San Antonio alone this year so far.
Many pounds have a ‘kill policy’ mutts, mongrels pedigrees and puppies alike.
For every animal that is destroyed, another breeder or puppy mill have produced thousands more.
So please, if you know someone who is thinking of buying a pet for someone this Christmas, please suggest to them that they visit their local pound. If more people did this, puppy mills would eventually come to an end due to no demand through pet stores etc.
They will have given a chance, a new start for an animal in need,
And they will have saved a life.
Thank you….
From all the dogs and cats in pounds and centres all over America and Great Britain.

It is so sad to see the amount of animals that are put to sleep every week at the local shelter. I know from first hand experience that some local shelters put to sleep almost everything that comes into the shelters. Especially the babies and almost all cats.

Households that are busy during the holidays are not really the ideal place to bring a new pet. It is kinder and less stressful to wait until after the holiday mayhem has died down....both for the humans and the animals. Think about it....would you want to be thrust into a brand new enviroment when no one has the time to help ease you into it, not knowing what is expected of you while at the same time expected to be on your best behaviour.

Oh Maggie I completely agree!!!
And which is why I said at the beginning, that the problem is that people WILL still buy pets at Christmas. People shouldn't its true,, but they do.
My point was really that if they are going to, go to a pound rather than a pet store or breeder.
But I do agree with you Maggie 100% they shouldnt.
Trouble is.. so mamy as we know will anyway.

Great blog
I volunteer for the largest No Kill Animal shelter in NC. We go to Pet Smart to adopt them out once a month and we have quite a few pedigree dogs. Two weeks ago when we were there we had a Weimaraner ...it was brought to us because it was TOO active for the people that had bought her. The month before that we had a poodle that was brought there after the owner had passed away . There's lots of small pedigree dogs brought because the owners have small children and the "little" dogs like to chase them, nipping at their feet...haha.
If anyone is looking for an animal I would hope they would check their local shelters because they have some of the best dogs there. If I could, I would adopt them ALL . I love the feeling of knowing that I was able to help the animals find a great home.
