Most of the new cellphones have a built-in camera. It's becoming a standard feature now. Typically, the lowest resolution camera/phone sold is 1.2 megapixel. This should produce a screen image of 1024 x 768, depending on the settings. Many of the profile photos found on Matchdoctor are taken from cellphones but they are often the size of a postage stamp. Usually all that I've seen have a snowy appearance. I'm not sure if the people are e-mailing the photos to themselves and the cellphone carrier is reducing the size. But the quality of these photos is nowhere near acceptable. I haven't tried e-mailing any photos from my Blackberry that has a 2.0 megapixel camera. I download the photos directly when I link the phone to the computer. The quality of those photos are good, but much lower quality than my 6 year old Olympus camera. They're not designed to rival dedicated cameras, I'm sure of that. A few times I've been in places and my camera wasn't around, so I shot images from my phone that were marginally OK. Really not what I would have wanted.
I'm pretty frugal. As long as my Olympus camera is still working (it's been dropped, abused, sits in a hot car all day) I don't feel the need to buy another. However this holiday season I expect to see huge blow-out prices for many retailers as they need to move merchandise in a slumped economy.
Getting a slim new 10 megapixel camera for 60-70% off may be a good enough reason to purchase a new camera.
