We've all heard the cliche, "Walk a mile in another man's shoes," which, most often, can't be done, but how hard do we actually try to understand another's perspective? Ever try changing the names & places, then re-analyzing a situation?
Case 1
Suppose your religion, your economy, your way of life, and even your life, has been threatened by foreign interests for years, and years. In particular, a country that is immensely stronger than yourself in all ways. They won't back down, they won't give up, but declaring war against them would be suicidal & useless. You wake up one morning to discover that one of your countrymen successfully launched a sneak attack against them causing massive destruction & death, and is now hiding out locally. Would you support this retaliation against foreign interests, or side with the foreigner power? [Shoe switch!] Would you support Osama?
Case 2
Suppose, Texas has decided to declare autonomy. The governor has decided the USA no longer serves the same interests. They see the federal laws as stifling their freedom, at best, and criminal, at worst. Suppose Texas favours laws that the rest of the country views as criminal. Suppose, they want to create a fascist dictatorship. Would you want the federal government to deny Texas departure from the union? What if the use of force was necessary? Or, perhaps, you'd support Texas, despite their desire to create something completely against everything you stand for. [Shoe switch!] Would you support Tibet?
