Something to keep in mind as you buy gifts and gift cards this holiday season. Gee it is a sad thing to see some of these stores closing their doors while others are just shutting down stores in certain locations.
Here are several stores that informed the Security Exchange of closing plans between October 2008 and January 2009:
Circuit City stores...most recent (? how many)
Ann Taylor- 117 stores nationwide are to be shuttered
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherine's to close 150 store nationwide
Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January
Cache will close all stores
Talbot’s closing down all stores
J. Jill closing all stores
GAP closing 85 stores
Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January
Wickes Furniture closing down
Levitz closing down remaining stores
Bombay closing remaining stores
Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January
Whitehall closing all stores
Piercing Pagoda closing all stores
Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January
Home Depot closing 15 stores 1 in NJ (New Brunswick)
Macys to close 9 stores after January
Linens and Things closing all stores
Movie Galley closing all stores
Pacific Sunware closing stores
Pep Boys Closing 33 stores
Sprint/ Nextel closing 133 stores
JC Penney closing a number of stores after January
Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores
Wilson Leather closing down all stores
Sharper Image closing down all stores
K B Toys closing 247 stores
Lowe’s to close some stores
Dillard's to close some stores
Some of these stores I know and have shopped regularly and some of them I have never heard of. It is sad when this happens, because more people are now without jobs. I do pray that the economy will pick up soon.

There are only two here on the list. Home Depot and Pennys.
Pennys has not done well since Ihave lived here. They are still in one of thse old buildings and do not have alot of stock.
We have already lost one lumber store. Lumbermans has turned into Pro build, hate to be one of those Home Depots that close.
We lost one Ace hardware too.. J

It is sad and alarming to see so many businesses closing the doors.
Our local Mall and our surrounding area has lost quite a number of business entities and many times new business does not thrive long.

I was the store manager for KB Toys last year and 2 months before Christmas we got the announcement that we were closing, as were 117 other stores nationwide. Luckily for us, our DIstrict Manager had negotiations with our mall and got our mall rent lowered so we got to stay.
But that 356 KB Toys closing isn't exactly accurate. There isn't even 356 KB Toys left nationwide. There are currently 247 and that includes the one I worked at. And I would not be surprised if they were all closing. When I worked there they downsized management so I lost my job. And when I say downsize, I mean they laid off all 4 current managers in my store, and hired 2 new ones who would work for alot less pay.
It really is sad to see all these businesses closing. So many people are going to be out of work.

Some of those really shock me....probably the biggest shock is the Sprint/Nextel one.
One chain that was omitted from the list is Steve & Barry's. Our store is in the process of closing it's doors.
We do have a JC Penney's here in Marshfield, but I've not heard about it's status in the near future.
The whole list is a sad statement about today's economy.

Dillard's to close some stores My mom works in a Dillard's that is closing. After the first of the year, she will be out of a job. It will be hard for a 69 year old woman to find another one.

The situation is even worse (at least here in the South) with industrial plants. The last factory in our city's industrial park, a manufacturer of cabinets for Lowe's and Home Depot, suddenly closed its doors on Wednesday, and put up a For Sale sign. There is a West Lumber wholesale facility still open, but it is in bankruptcy and will close any day now.
Most of our shopping centers are now at least half empty. Six restaurants have closed since September. Some shopping centers have no tenants at all. Even when open, however, the stores and restaurants generally only paid minimum wage.
Thus, between retail and factory closings, out county has lost over 2000 jobs in the past year. From what I hear, the pattern is the same elsewhere. Keep in mind, that my county is in the Metro Atlanta Area. I can't imagine how bad it is in more remote locations.

One other thing about gift cards, if they're marked from a bank or other lending institution, as opposed to just the business itself, the laws do not apply. In other words, if you live in a state that has "no expiration" when you can cash a gift card, it no longer applies and a "limited" time to cash is determined by the lending institution. Be very careful and ask questions before purchasing one. It's very misleading.
