Good point...
I wonder what he (the Dalai Lama) would say about the tax-deduction receipts...

Since you are in a chartable mood . . .
Please send me Idaho potatoes and Western Prime Grade steaks ASAP! I am getting tired of 88 cents a pound whole chickens and cans of Chef Boyardee mini-ravioli that were on special at the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket last month. Oh, and since you are Swiss, I bet you have some cheese makers in the family - a nice 10 kilo wheel of REAL Swiss cheese would be nice too! I will be happy to send you a reciept for the gifts to use on your tax return this Spring.
Seriously, you had some good thoughts in your little blog.

A rare degree of generosity and Christian ethics rarely seen on this website where the law of the right-wing jungle generally prevails and poor people are seen as greedy parasites too lazy to work and responsible for their plight.

a nice 10 kilo wheel of REAL Swiss cheese would be nice too! You cannot import (customs confiscates...), nor sell, REAL Swiss cheese in the USA. What you can buy here is only a poor and tasteless imitation of how real cheese ought to be. The Americans are so scared of catching some kind of cheese disease (???) that the milk for making cheese must be boiled to death. But without life bacteria, any cheese tastes like cardboard.
Yes, I can send you a couple of Idaho potatoes ... (no receipt necessary.... )

and responsible for their plight Some have had the very bad luck for being born poor (which is probably at least 50% of the world population....) And then there are those who made/make bad choices and it wrecks their life. I believe that one needs to help all of them.
We all have made bad choices one time or another.... only some of us were/are lucky enough that it didn't bring too bad consequences on us, or we had somebody (often daddy) to bail us out. Therefore, one should be charitable and help those along who "just can't help it".... like little boys who keep getting in trouble...
And isn't the whole action of helping good enough for not needing a tax-deductible receipt? .

My Mom & I were talking yesterday about what I have given to the Goodwill when my children outgrow things. She asked me what the paper is that is handed to me each time I go there; I tell them no thanks I don't want the receipt. I told her that it is a receipt for those that work to so they can get taxes deducted. I am not one that works cuz of disabilities & she said it was so wrong that people would get to deduct it from taxes just for doing something nice. I agree, you should be giving to help others, not just cuz your taxes will benefit or something. And you are right, charity is anonymous; at least if someone sees you do it you shouldn't expect thanks for doing something from your heart for others.

it is GREAT that some generously give, without regards to receipts or tax deductions, BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, if others need the extra incentives, so be it. as long as those in need get help, that is the important thing. or not...

Jacksonboy and callmemax...
This is the one reason everybody gives for justifying the "hunt for the receipt". One could justify almost everything and anything with good rhetoric.
But.... there are religions that are very clear on the matter.... where one is not supposed to show off, nor receive public or monetary recognition for a good deed. Because, it is still a "simple" good deed when one receives a "gift" (lower taxes) in return. Isn't that gift like some sort of payment?
I believe that then... it is not charity anymore.... it is a trade....

it is not charity anymore.... it is a trade.... It's not exactly a trade. A donation of, say, $110, might save ya $10 in taxes. It can be viewed as the government topping up your $100 with an extra $10 towards the same charity.
That's the good way of looking at it.
The problem is: every tax credit requires additional paperwork. Extra work = extra cost = higher taxes. Is the benefit worth it? No.
Unless....you're the CEO of a major corporation, create a non-profit shell corporation (of which you're the sole owner), to which you donate lots of money, save oodles of taxes....but you're effectively donating to yourself. (Such shell corporations are often used to purchase lots of personal use items, like cars, which are very difficult to prove it's not being used for business.) Certainly, this is illegal....but VERY hard to prevent. To prevent it....we need auditors, more paper trails, lawyers, administration....all resulting in higher taxes for everyone.
If it weren't for the 'generosity' of the government, you might have $120 to give away to your favourite charity. You're ahead. Charity is ahead. Government is ahead. Fat cat CEO can bite me.
Bottom line: It may sound un-nice....but killing ALL tax credits for charitable donations is best for everyone.

I couldn't have said it any better... Thank you for the explanations...
Pinkypaula...
You mentioned something that's a great way to get extra tax deductions: giving the hand-me-downs to charities...
Around here (and probably elsewhere, too) they give you a receipt without amount at Goodwill and all the other charitable thrift stores. You write the amount yourself....
Sooooo..... one can mark down nice $$$ amounts for stuff that one would have thrown in the trash otherwise... A real goldmine....
.... great charity.... .
