Since all three automakers are on the verge of collapse and bankrupcy and all have car lines that aren't popular for design reasons or priced for the average consumer, why not merge all three companys into one manufacturer.

The merger of all three would create a new automotive company called "Americar USA." Ford would manufacture the trucks, Chrysler would manufacture the luxury autos, and General Motors would manufacture passenger cars. No crossover of product lines would be allowed.

If this were to happen, it would eliminate all the overlapping models that are now in existence among the auto giants and we would be more competitive with the foreign companies.

They're certainly being treated as a single company. If, indeed, they were independant & competitive with one another....one company would surely fail before the other two and could be bought out, cannabilized, restructured...

Resulting in some (but not nearly as many) job losses and two stronger auto makers.

If the government wants to get involved....so be it....but do it in a good ol' fashioned capitalist manner: buy voting shares. The company gets the money they so desperately need....government gets a say in how it's run. If they still tank, government still ends up losing the money, sure....but better than just throwing it to the wind.

I agree with you 100% but it isn't going to happen. Bush will help all three before he leaves office if he can.

Obama is left with his GIGANTIC mess on all fronts.

Well now I see we have Joe the car maker.

The major problem with the American car manufactures is the same as with all the other companies that have been purchased by Foreign countries--yes Countries. You see why you were buying that Japanese car so cheap the Japanese government was supporting that company. As with the TV, Radio, and all the other systems, the american way of commerce was cutting the American throat.

Typical example---American man/woman working for american company but buying foreign cars. Auto/steel unions want high pay and free medical with excellent retirement---it used to be able to pass on to you or the Americans that bought American.

To support all those people who think foreign product is better than American products and work for an American company, then you should be fired because you are part of the problem of poor quality.

School teachers do not produce a good product.
Government workers do not produce good work
Congress has let the country down due to greed.
Banks have done the same.

So, don't blame The Big 3 for they have done thier part, butAmericans have done more to put the economy in the position it is in now.

Aren't you happy.

Yep, it is time to buy the USA up for 10 cents on the dollar.

Think of the three american auto companies as the three stooges. I guess GM would be Mo, Ford is Larry and Chrystler is Curly.

If three stooges asked for billions of dollars, then merged together, would you get a higher quality product? Of course not.

The three auto manufacturers had godawful marketing professionals who lost touch as to what americans really want. If all of them merged together, you have a monopoly of car manufacturers who are running around telling us what we want in a car rather than asking us what we want.

Their most popular vehicle would be something that guzzles gas (ford's contribution) that constantly breaks down (gm's contribution) and looks ugly (chrystler's contribution).

I say if you build a product that no one wants, your company should be allowed to fail. Toyota and Honda have come into the U.S. and given us a pretty good product don't you think?
