There’s a river in the distance I can see its surface shining Hear the roar of water moving Drawn toward it, unbound, willing Hear the river hear it calling So I walk toward it listening And I Kneel beside it waiting Looking down the depths inviting And I long to know its secrets In the dark and rushing coldness If I beg it to receive me Will it gently take me deeply? Will it whisper all its knowledge And confide its magic to me? As I look towards the headway And I see no answers ready I then look towards the trailing And I know no voices tell me What I need to know is deeply Guarded kept for all who seek it And my soul longs for the answer So I let the water take me I fall tumbling downward floating And the depths they feel my needing And my body feels so weightless Looking up towards the surface Longing lust to live in darkness With the swirling soft caresses Will the river love me gently Will it breathe my life inside me Or will it find need to crush me Claiming all MY secrets from me And I stay below the surface As my lungs beg for my living And the river gives his answer That my life lies on the surface So I push towards the silver Of the dancing sunlight quivers On the top I burst through gasping Taking life inside my body And I kick towards the landfall Just to crawl like I were beaten But the answers I was seeking Were inside me just awak-ning So I step upon the earth bank And I turn to see the river Bend to touch the river’s surface And my hands bring up the silver My lips kiss the drops of water Gently hanging from my fingers Let them fall upon the river As my thirst no longer burning I’m content to know my purpose Just to know I walk beside it I will never claim its beauty I will never own its power I will follow where it leads me And I look out all around me There I face the trailing sunset Walking back along my footsteps I will always hear with longing Theres a river in the distance.
