Come on MD. Why are you dragging your heels about actually checking the IP addresses of new members that sign up?
I for one am getting pretty sick and tired of getting winks &/or emails from these Russian bride outfits.
Checking IP's of new people during the signup process would definitely alleviate people from other countries trying to make it look like they're in the USA. It wouldn't take long at all to implement, and would also be very easy to do.
Why bother with having the option to block people in other countries from messaging you, if they sign up stating they live within the USA?

But we do check IPs. We can't tell the person is actually Russian until their broken English mail messages start flying around the system.

What about checking their geographical location if they're coming from the states? Then if they choose the wrong state, throw a cookie on their computer that won't allow them to attempt to signup again. Grabbing and storing a hardware ID from these spammers in your database would help immensely too.

Simple Solution:
Ban access to the site being accessed through proxy servers :P
Nearly all proxy servers will give some kind of indicator that it is indeed a proxy.

Ack, and when I've travelled, my IP had nothing to do with my Nevada address here...or my normal IP.

Go ahead and splurge for the gold....then you can block email from other countries. Really cuts down on the worst of the spam.

Let's not share that anybody can do the same thing (unless they're working through a "valid" acceptable IP)

As you can see, there isn't any one simple solution. We actively work to prevent spam. However, hungry people can be very resourceful. They continually play cat & mouse with us--when we adapt to their technique they adapt to ours. The best way you can help is to click the "Report Spam" link when you are reading a mail message from an obvious spammer.

You won't get mad, will you, when they start reporting the counter-spam we've been hitting them back with?

The spammers/scammers really are a nuisance, but it's really not that difficult to report and delete. Actually, I leave my messages there just to see how long before they get deleted. You'd be amazed how quickly they "poof".

When we adapt to their technique they adapt to ours. Just like those pesky Borg on Star Trek.

No, they're more like Tribbles... I've responded to a couple of spammers with off the wall comments then reported them and blocked them. It's fun!

I love tribbles! A little butter, some garlic... fillet them just right! Mmmmmm.....
So why can't MD block emails that have an email address in the body? I have out-of-country emails blocked, but more come in from the states, especially from LA and NYC areas. It is a nuisense.

We're working on some filters to deal with the spammers. We're hoping to launch this service early next week.
