Soliciting for comments is another issue which affects the popularity of a blog.

I disagree totally, over the last two weeks, I have seen the best blogs ever posted since I been on here actually. It's just human nature to look and post on crazy wild rude blogs. That doesn't mean that real great blogs aren't being posted.

I believe SweetNapaGuy hit on a possible solution for what contributes to "most popular."

If the criteria for popularity could be linked to the number of different commentors as well as to the number of kudos, we might actually get a good cross section/variety of popular blogs. For some time now, the popular blogs page has ceased to be representative of all the blog pages have to offer because of the loophole of the OP posting repeatedly as well as the ensuing discussions and banter (often having little or nothing to do with the "blog."

I love the variety here and I'd hate to see blogland pigeonholed as to what subject matter can be posted there. If that occurs, then it becomes as complicated and diluted as the forum pages - and its uniqueness is lost.

There are always going to be individuals who just want things to suit themselves. It becomes a game or competition to push the rules and question everything. Perhaps these folks should develop their own sites?

I think the rules here are pretty good ones - quite clear and quite fair. Just like any rule of law, it is enforcement that is the difficult part. The mods have to walk a line between tyranny and indifference and they have most often been lenient - choosing to allow blogland to report abuse, thus policing itself to a large degree. As this is a participatory site, that usually works best. But when the solution to some of the major arguments is as simple as closing a loophole, why not make it official and automatic?

If the OP and commentors were limited to one comment per blog, they might actually think twice about what they want to say.

The whole "popular" concept is so distorted on the "popular" page. Let's take a look at the present #1, #8 and #9 entries:

#1: Eight paragraph opinion on a news story.

#8: Six paragraphs drawing an analogy between something encountered during the day and people.

#9: One sentence asking for response.

#1: 130 comments, 21 unique commenters, 3 kudos

#8 18 comments, 18 unique commenters; 12 kudos

#9: 32 comments, 8 unique commenters, 2 kudos

Do these three belong on the same page? Hardly! With a one comment per person per blog limitation, they would not even be close. Does 8 people, only two of which found the blog kudo-worthy define 'popuar'? Well, apparenty on MD...

Is there anyone besides me who reads the blogs but never checks to see which are the most popular? Just curious, I know the list is there but consider it much like other rating systems, what one person likes is not neccessarily what I will enjoy or want to read. JMHO

....still hanging around somewhere in midair suspense.....

Never could understand these HOT discussions about blogs, forums and people..

Me thinks we should all be mature enough to be able to choose what/ who we like or dislike....since I am most certainly NOT a popular person on here, maybe my opinion don't matter anyway.

Nice to see ya Gray...

I never pay attention to the most popular or recent replied ones. I look at the last blog posted and work my way through.

I'm sure I've read them all at one time.. doesn't matter who thinks which are most popular.. I know what I like to read.

Hugss to all , have a nice relaxing Sunday~

While I agree the commentors should be limited to one comment per blog per day, I think the blogger should be able to post as many comments as they want. Just don't count those comments in whatever arcane formula determines blog popularity.

I've ceased watching that thread. In the last 50 comments, how many unique commentors were there? At a guess, I'd say the last 50 comments consisted of about 40 of the comments being from the same three or four people (last I checked, it was the blogger and one commentor for the last ten or twenty comments).

I guess they're getting around the 100-email limit by exchanging emails in an open forum.

Best to do away with the most popular as Lacy has pointed out they do not show a blogs true popularity very well. Most that reach the top five are not blogs period, but discussion forums.

Just thought of something:

If limiting number of comments per blog per day is too onerous, how about only allowing the calculations for popularity to number of unique commentors, rather than number of comments in total (if that's how popularity is defined)?

I'm more in favor of "one comment per blog per day," because unless new commentors join in on the discussion, it turns a popular blog into just a way of bypassing the email limit.

I think that the one comment, per blog, per day, is a little harsh, BUT as Sci said, it will make people think about their comment before posting.

At least I think it was Sci who said that?

Why not allow all comments, but only register one per member with regards to the popularity?

I am sure this has been said before within this thread.

I like both ideas SweetNapaGuy. Something should be tried to reflect better a blogs true popularity if thats so important to everyone. I think that was Retigr but either way I can't think of two people who make more sense than 99percent of the people on here.
