The problem is people are not using the features we have now properly.
No, the problem is people whining, bitching and moaning and chastising others instead of simply spreading love and cheer. The problem is also jealousy over how popular or unpopular their poem/blog/post is. What the heck is the difference ? They could eliminate the popular page, if that would make you happy. Geez. Put out whatever it is that you got and see what happens. Learn to live with the results instead of moaning about it and trying to sequestor others. A strength of this site is the diversity.

We are discussing the title of the thread, which is 'popular blog pages'

It is a little tiny link on the view blog page... why get rid of it?
Sometimes you want to go back to a discussion or comment, can you imagine wading thru pages of blogs to find it? Hell I cant even get the names straight never mind trying to find a blog.

@ Jim:
Leaving aside the other comments in the thread, do you think my idea (i.e. counting only the number of unique commentors over the past couple of days) is good or bad?
I'm throwing ideas out there and hoping for some feedback. If you spot some flaws, I'd appreciate some constructive criticism.
The only flaws I can think of are: (1) it would encourage people to blog a LOT as their old blogs drop off the Top 10 list, and (2) it would encourage short-term popularity by people posting progressively more controversial blogs.
It'd be kind of nice to have a third list, actually. "Enduring Blogs," for blogs whose popularity continues to be generated even after a week. Or even list a random 3 enduring blogs on top of the Popular Blogs, just to encourage people to want to get on that list...
Just posting ideas...

many seem to like the popular blogs concept. I will be the first to admit, when I write a blog, that I really do try to make a blog, seeing kudos or comments , for the effort is appreciated. As for the nonsense I write, its all in fun, and I could care less.
A recent blog I wrote came back later with an asterick after the title. I didnt put it there, it just showed up. I had no clue what it was or meant. A few left one in the comments as well. I later learned what it meant. It not only made me feel good about what I wrote, it inspired me to want to attempt to write more in sincerity, and less in nonsense.
so here is my thought. All blogs should be made to have mandatory tags on them. However, you can only tag it a blog, if it is a legitimate blog. Not copy/paste, not discussion, etc. If it is tagged incorrectly, or it falls into a discussion/argument, it should be reported and deleted.
Only a genuine blog, tagged accordingly, should be considered criteria, for the "popular" blogs list.
personally, I pay no attention to popular lists, but I do use the recently commented on list, to track blogs I am interested in.

MISSLISS78.... ..out of the mouths of babes(newbies) ..good comment
It seems that 'some' of the most popular blogs are 'inflammatory' Some are popular (like Classy's) for good reasons
A new blogger just might get an innapropriate message when the 'questionable' blogs are rewarded with 'popular' status....or A new blogger might be encouraged to follow suit......re.....'inflammatory' blog

Leaving aside the other comments in the thread, do you think my idea (i.e. counting only the number of unique commentors over the past couple of days) is good or bad? Nappa - I'm kinda involved with someone rigt now. But, I think unique commentors should definitely count for more than re-occuring commentors. However, I do think the blog with an equal number of unique commentors, but more total commentors should be considered more popular. There should be a diminishing impact. i.e. Someone's 6th comment should count for less than their 5th, which would count less than their 4th, etc... The person's first comment should count for the most 'score'.
Also, I think the actual mathematical formula for popular blogs should be listed publicly. That way (for those who care), they would all be on equal ground for what to shoot for and people could check to see that it is working properly. Many have noticed that there's some less than popular blogs that end up on the list.
We are discussing the title of the thread, which is 'popular blog pages' Check the title again Choos. It is "Get rid of the most popular blog pages." That is what I was discussing. Getting rid of the table displaying which were most popular. Get it ?

I abhor the "popular blogs" listing. I wouldn't mind it at all if the blogs were genuine BLOGS, but I can't stand the blogs being nothing more than a private chatroom or private forum. To me a blog is supposed to be a BLOG, something original, thoughts from ones heart or life...not something to recruit public converstaion. It's not supposed to be a place to play nonsense games or win prizes for one's popularity (the tongue-in-cheek "vote for me" ones not withstanding ).
And to me, the comments should be directed toward the topic and the blogger, ONLY. I'm pretty sure that this is what MatchDoc had in mind when he introduced the blogging feature. Chat and Forums and email and even IM were already in place...it was supposed to be an additional feature added to each member's profile to let others know about THEM, not everyone else.
I will say, though, that due to some peoples comments and behavior, not only in blogs but in forums, I've learned a lot about those who I'd never be interested in meeting. I've also learned who I'd REALLY like to meet and have met a whole bunch of them already (I'm not done meeting people yet...only done with making my current "nevermind" list. ) Funny thing, though...among the one's I've met and those I'd like to, I can certainly say that we don't all think alike -- but I still respect them, as cool interesting people, whatever their views.
==================
Also, I think the actual mathematical formula for popular blogs should be listed publicly. Yeh, right. Just like when certain nasty "spoilsports" solicited people to post negative kudos on certain people's blogs. Cripes, MIDDLE SCHOOL mindset and immaturity.

Is this or something similar viable?
As he said also, some of us were "tagging " our blogs with asterisks and/or ~ as a sort of code that it was original material of "genuine" (ha ha) blog material... But lots of infrequent bloggers didn't know why this was done and therefore it could be only partially successful in an informal way.

MIDDLE SCHOOL mindset and immaturity Allowing people the knowledge of how the popular blogs formula is calculated would be "middle school mindset immaturity" ? I never imagined that anyone would describe the divulgence of knowledge in such a fashion. I guess some would rather stay deaf, dumb and blonde.

Others, deaf-dumb-blondes, would say F.U., kiddy, knowing that you and your kind would be among the first to take advantage of and abuse the "formula"...as happened before and is the sole reason why the negative kudos were eliminated.

Why would we get rid of the most popular blog page? It gives us easy access to the recent “blog wars.”
Heck, if MD did away with it; that would mean I would have to actually search for the blogs that do nothing but name call, degrade and make this site look like noting but a bunch of bitter and hateful people.
Since those kinds of blogs always shoot to the top, I like having a shortcut to them.

Popular blog pages are supposedly just there to let us know where the "fun" is more likely at since a lot of people posted comments not to mention it's like engaging in a conversation with more people. Am I correct matchdoctor? That's all. It's not to discount other blogs at all. If (when) there were more comments on those blogs as well they become popular too. :)

Wait a minute! Scratch what I just wrote previously! I just read the original comment again (where's my mind today? ) and even though I stand by what I say otherwise, I was not here as he was when he said before the popular pages was invented there was serious not just attention seeking writing. With that said I must say he has a very point indeed. :)

The popular blogs list is still on MY front page And that is something I do have an issue with. Let me explain...
Usually the most controversial 'blogs' (and I use the term loosely) are at the top because they stir the pot the most, thus generating the most comments. So here we have a religious or political argument with tons of childish behavior and name calling right there at the top of the blogs page, and when somebody comes to check the site out and arrives at the front page that is the first thing they see.
Is that really how Matchdoctor wants newcomers to perceive the site? Is that the first impression any of us want to give prospective new members?

And I agree with EF. There are many beautifully written blogs buried by such blogs.
