I am a photographer and love to vary my photos on this site. It would be great if you put a simple css site wide code in to disallow right clicking on a pic and saving it.
People could still post photos etc but it would encourage artists and photographers a chance to show more of their work. Could even become a photoforum type thing.
Anyway it is easy code to do... and beneficial for copyright liability on your behalf as well.

all the best,
cc

I agree totally. I refuse to post my good photos just for that reason.
It would also greatly reduce pilfering of photos by scammers.
As it stands now, all they have to do is right click, copy and crop to remove
the MatchDoctor mark. Anyone can do that easily.
Adding this recommendation would potentially save you a lot of legal fees.

water marking only handles a portion of the benefits MD would gain from this suggestion...
there are several kinds of watermarking
1.where one puts an electronic non visible tracing code and allows one to trace their work
2. the other is an see thru low opacity marking that is overlayed on the piece

both are good ideas but it does not handle the
litagation that could occur with the non visible markings
and does not encourage the postings...
and for some the #2 is also something we could clone out....etc.

but yeh it is an option but there is more to this suggestion
ty for your comments

Its impossible to prevent copying images. The right click trick is to use javascript to prevent it. All you have to do is turn of javascript and you can right click all you want. You can always do a screen copy or use software to copy a portion of the screen on the browser. Browser cache always has temporary images you can mine. The best thing to do is watermark he photo because its virtually impossible to remover. If you're showing an art photo use a low res to display it...

I'm not understanding the litigation threats here. From what I understand and I'm sure I read somewhere, that everything we post here is at our own risk.

Like I'm going to sue MD if someone takes my pic off here and uses it??? I'm the one that put it here. They didn't make me.

if you really wanted to share your photo's with the world..find a suitable site, load all your photo's there... and provide a hot linked url to the site

It's been my understanding that most sites that allow the posting of photographs generally assume copyright over those photographs, unless explicitly stated otherwise. (Take a look at recent photo uploads: they all have that "Matchdoctor" logo on them.) So generally don't post anything you wouldn't want a company to take over.

Luckily, all my photos are taken with really crappy cameras, so who else would want to claim credit for them?

You acknowledge and agree that any material you post in any areas on this site, including photos or other images, that are accessible to the public or this site's membership, in whole or in part, will be treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary and this site may use such material in any medium for any purpose, including but not limited to the reproduction, disclosure, transmission, publication, broadcast and posting of such material in advertising and promotions.

EXCEPTION: You may post a copyrighted story or poem in a public area and retain any valid copyright(s) you may possess on the story/poem, IF AND ONLY IF you enclose the story/poem in quotation marks, and mark it with a byline at the end of the story/poem. In doing so, you grant a perpetual permenant free license for us to use your story/poem in public areas of this site at our discretion, but for no other purposes. Note that public areas of this site may be crawled and indexed by search engines.

Seems like posting photos on MD allows them to use it for commercial/advertising/promotional purposes...

Yes of course there are ways around the javascript as everything as simple as a screencapture but resolution differences occur with that.
It is just an encouragement that there would be an intentional decision to violate.
People talk on here about plagarism of words and copyright law applies the same to images and digital media.

interesting how MD does not honor all creative media equally......
The end of my photo sharing here my friends... you will have to contact me through other services that do consider it important...

First of all this was an attempt to find a WIN-WIN-WIN situation for both MD, the creative and the users of MD.
I would like to respond at this time to the comments that were posted.
1/ Hammertime
I understand that it is impossible to stop. … but it would become intentional. Yes the right click can also be done in javascript as well. There are multitudes of coding methods to do this. You can also do a screen capture as well. I do understand this. Watermarking is not impossible to remove however. Low resolution is only an answer if you are trying to avoid high quality print but for reuse on 72dpi monitor devices this is not a deterrent.
It would however serve the purpose to stop many from easily taking copyrighted work.
2/Bandmom
You misunderstood me. I love to share my work with friends and am not working on this idea vs. md but for the best of all as stated in the top portion of this response. I would like to share more even.
Let me try two alternative ways to express this.
a. For ex. Some MD person posts an image that is copyrighted image. MD puts its claim on it. They are now involved when that is traced by watermark tracing software (note the two types of watermarks described above.) The company of the original image comes after MD… who may still have a loop hole clause but has to go through the expense of proving it.
b. OR… a person posts a pic of their family and friends and that too can be easily copied and past around as well. (this idea further protects children and people who use this system from this happening as well.)
3/ Gallows
Yes this is the current answer… but it could be a much more fun new feature for this site if it could happen here allowing for comments etc like an artist blog… It could be looked at as a safety feature and a new fun feature. But yes you are correct in your suggestion.

4/ Sweet Napa
Couldn’t there be an exception process for visual art worked out like there is for verbal art? So if the artist has a published piece this could apply as well? But yes this is how it currently reads and I was trying to make a suggestion where all MD, MD users and MD artists could all WIN in this.

Background data:
(not I am not a lawyer but work in digital media)
Our laws try to balance the idea of sharing work and protecting artists. Works are only protected for a limited time. (these apply to the web as well as paper publications)When a copyrighted piece comes out of the time frame for the copyright they are share for the general good of the public. This applies with different time periods(patent/copyright etc)That is when it become public domain.
Copyright is further broken down into
1.reproducing rights
2.adaptation rights or derivative
3. display rights
4.distribution rights etc.
5. performance rights
In a global perspective it gets even more complex so I will leave it at that for now.
US Copyright Office http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/

I was proposing something that would better protect MD, the MD user and the MD artists and a new idea for a new arena in this site that many might like.
I also was proposing something that would protect our users from identity thief, their childrens postings (for those that choose to do that) etc.
It would not stop all but it would make it a more difficult task for most and a conscious taking for most.
It could even be an option for those who wish to lock their files and those who wish not to giving us the best of both.
I hope this is clearer now for all of you.
All the best,
cc

One reason you have had no response from MD is that it is the weekend. Sometimes the Mod is here on the weekends, but the support and tech staff doesn't work 24/7.

My suggestion is that you look at younger ladies cleavages.

These would fail to sag to that level.
