If someone is contacting me in a less than desireable way, is there a way to block the person? If not, what other measures can I take?

hit the block button on any email they've sent you. you'll never get mail from them again.

FM.... what happens when someone tries to e-mail someone when they are blocked??
Does the system notify them they are blocked from sending e-mail... or does it appear the e-mail was sent normally and the sender sees that it never gets read?

You guessed it, chat. The sender does not receive notification....they will only see the email remain unopened in their sent box.

any and all emails ever received by the blocker completely disappear from their mailbox while the bad guy/sender is blocked.
(i'm not an expert on the whole thing because i've never blocked anybody, tempting as it's been, lol )

I've been a spam magnet this week and I started replying to some of these profiles. It's amazing how "No, I'm NOT interested... go away!!" gets perceived as a reason to send a SECOND invitation to join them on Yahoo and see their photos.
I've been clicking the block button much more than usual.

I think I figured it out awhile back. You go to your blocked list, unblock them, copy what you need, then block them again.
Or maybe I copied from the responses in my sent box.

once an e-mail is gone... it's really gone. Are you saying the contrary?

Hang on, I'm testing.
===========
Well THAT didn't work I unblocked a jerk, but he's cancelled. So I don't know if he's able to be unblocked ...but the emails I sent him are still in my sent mail, along with the original icky comments he made to me (and my "firm" replies )

That buttons gonna come in real handy. For some reason I get a lot of spammers, and guys who get angry at your lack of interest.
