Scams...

It seems that 90% of the emails I get here are from someone spamming or scamming. MD wants people to pay to get the "premium" features, but MD doesn't seem to be doing anything about the scammers. Get rid of all the scamming going on, and perhaps more people would pay to enjoy the better features... me included. Right now, it's simply not worth it because so many profiles on here are FAKE!

A suggestion... start blocking entire IP ranges that correspond to the offending countries. Block by the 3rd and 4th octet to start... then move to the first and second if need be. I mean really, how many of us are looking for mates in Africa, Russia, and China? If we wanted to find someone in these countries, then we would go to sites specifically geared toward people from those regions!

I hope you are at least taking the time to report these emails you receive to MD. They really do a good job trying to "police" these type of people & getting rid of them.

I am Gold and have been for a while and I still get very little scam mail.

Scammers are everywhere. You just have to be educated enough to know one (it isn't difficult).

This is a free site. There are some things you have to deal with if it's going to stay free.

I agree with you, free or not, these people shouldn't be allowed anywhere, especially if there is a way to identify them. I recently reported one for the first time, and so far they are still on line and active. No matter how educated you may be, it's offensive to be approached by these people. It's like someone approaching my home with fake ID to get in and try to rob me. Would the police say it's okay because people should know better.

It REALLY isn't....scammers are nothing more than the cyber equivalent of junk mail...easy to spot and even easier to ignore...

Mom, you are invisible most of the time is why you don't generate as much scammer email. You do not show up on 'the hit list'. (Who is online)

I know...that's why I stay invisible.

But even when I am visible, I don't get that much.

My point is that this is basically a free site so people are going to have to take the good with the bad.

Or MD could hire people to screen every profile and start charing $30 a month.

I guess maybe I could have added "no big deal" or something since it was just a making conversation type observation, not a bitch!!

Not entirely true... I know of two other free sites that don't have the same problems at all. Screening isn't necessary. Blocking the offending IP addresses is all that is needed. My point is MD could probably double the number of gold members if they would take steps to keep them out. I know it's easy to spot them and that's not the point. The point is a good site will protect it's members by keeping them out. Obviously not everyone can spot them and are being taken in by it, otherwise they wouldn't keep hitting this site.

we block hundreds of them every day through our software and 'traps' as well as certain regional blocks. the ones who sneak through are generally using dynamic ips, proxies, and american or uk addresses (among several other things). we could block those ips, but we would also be blocking every valid single individual who actually lives in any of those areas or ip ranges. we choose not to and provide many different ways for you to report spam and scams.

we work diligently at both prevention and follow through.

if you have specific solutions, please direct your plan or coding to our technical staff through a support ticket. i'm sure they would appreciate the feedback.

btw, not all foreign members are fakes or scammers. we have a large international membership of completely legitimate members. we provide the ability for your to filter your incoming mail by region and other demographics. please make sure these are in place and please report any 'fakes' that you detect asap (including the true blue american 'hot babes' who try to lure guys to their pay to view websites).

we don't like the fakes any more than you do, but we try not to condemn entire continents or countries for the illegal or annoying activities of a few.

they 'hit this site' because of search engines. we have been online since february 2000 and our 'free dating site' often pops right to the top of the lists. there's nothing very clever about how they find us and not others.

Well, looking at my 'trash', I've gotten about 400 since October of last year, about 7 months. It really is no big deal to me - mark as spam, delete. I'm trying to get in the habit of blocking instead of deleting, to prevent retries. They really are awfully obvious...'hello pretty'!

Maybe we could have a mark as spam/block option on the list instead of having to open them...they really ARE that obvious.

Edited to add...at least he has a sense iof humor - just got this one!

I very RARELY get scammer email, maybe once or twice a month and always in my filtered box.

My mail settings are:

Allow females between the ages of 99-99 to send mail

The boxes I have checked are US and Western Europe

Nothing else, everything else is open.

I report every one I get and block, simple.
