Apparently David Beckham will be the highest paid sports person in the US - even though he plays a minority sport (soccer).
$250 million dollars over a 5 year period. Nice work if you can get it.

What does "Bend it like Beckham" mean?
I didn't see the mvie but I heard it starred the hot Parminder Nagra and hotter Keira Knightley.

well, I'm no fan of his, but whether people want him in the US or not....he's on his way.
Bend It Like Beckham refers to way he "used" to be able to make a football swerve pretty dramatically when taking free kicks and such.
Out of curiosity, who do LipGloss and kattsmeow think he should stay where he is?

Yes he should stay with his family and play with the team over there. We have enough Big time players that get paid too much money here.

I want Beckham to stay in Britain. With his wife. Renae, from what I've heard on Sports talk radio, it was kinda his wife's idea that he play in the US-she wants to be in Hollywood with the stars...so I suppose that the Galaxy can't try to trade him to Columbus.

Yep...apparently it was mainly his wife behind this decision. From a purely sporting point of view, it makes no sense. Obviously there are other considerations.

I would of thought the MLS team would of been better investing all that money in promoting and investing in American players instead of spending it on an over rated, well past his best player

Beckham wll make 250 Million if he doesnt get hurt , traded or doesnt play up to his contact. Isn't it also contingent on there being a team/league still in existence to pay him? Even the NFL doesn't pay anyone this kind of money-and they play in fromt of crowds of 70,000, and have deals with all four networks to show games...MLS plays in front of crowds about 1/3 that size-and which of the major networks covers them?

I want Beckham to stay in Britain. With his wife. Actually, LipGlossQueen9, Becks has been with Real Madrid since 2003.
Further, as I understand it, $40 mil./yr. of that deal is contingent upon licensed product sales. Even so, I doubt his total earnings will surpass Tiger Woods, or retiring Formula 1 ace Michael Schumacher.
This all seems quite ridiculous, but with Philip Anschutz and Simon Fuller (yes "that" Simon Fuller), two of the biggest powerhouses in sports and entertainment, behind the deal, I'm sure it's a sound gamble.

soccer as you call it is not a minority sport, it is global, unlike US sports like rounders or netball. He will generate massive revenue vastly outweighing his salary bill. He is also still playing in Europe at top level. He really shouldnt be wasting his talents on an ignorant self absorbant bunch of idiots like you lot but thats his call. Go and watch him bend it, you may well then get involved in a sport that someone outside of good old America actually gives a crap about

Cappo, it IS a minority sport in the USA, which is where the MLS -the league that pays his salary- is located. Generate massive revenue how? Americans in general dont give a flying f**k about Soccer (as we call it); if we did, the Columbus Crew wouldn't have moved out of the 100K+ seat OSU Stadium and built a facility that seats as much as a basketball arena. He may generate massive revenue in Europe, but I really feel that he's gonna be the poster boy for the (second) demise of Soccer in America...unless the "global" soccer community wants to send the MLS some money to subsidize this?
Didn't think so.

I dont suggest for a moment that football will be successful in the US and frankly I dont care, Americans will always stick to their own sports, for instance the World Series for rounders!!! And how many counties compete in that? erm USA? ERM?
But back to the point, Beckham, like him or loath him he is a global phenomenon, he will sell LA Galaxy merchandise all over the world. People will travel from other continents to see him play. Mark my words, he will pay his own pay check, and America will be too sell absorbed to notice the game that everyone else on the planet follows. You lot can concentrate on Super Bowl! Now correct me if I am wrong but that is rugby but with body armour so you dont get hurt, yes?
