Katt, gills are one of my favs. The lake here is full of them. I try to eat them 2-3 meals a week in summer. My even go out after I take care of Mister Turkey tomorrow morning.

Budo...that's the key right there. Sound management practices! It requires the efforts of everyone to be on top of the laws and to make others stay within the law. Wardens can only be in so many places and as stewards of the resource, it is our duty to help them when we are able. I follow the law to the letter and expect my fellow man to as well.

Had a real nice rain today and it's still pretty warm out. Had to take my little girl out for her last trip of the night and the drive was covered in garden worms. So, I grabbed the flashlight and a red filter for a nightcrawler hunt on the lawn. Picked about 3 dozen, dried them on paper, put them into bedding and am cooling them to 60-65 degrees now. Should be good for a few trips on the lake anyway

It appears that fishing is on hold for at least a week. Historic ave high temps here are in the 60's now...and they are saying we won't see FIFTY until at least Wednesday! Snow showers possible the next 3 days. Crud...
At least the gills won't be on the beds next weekend for the opener where these weekend warriors can rape the hell out of the spawners.

Reasons Why Fishing Is Better Than Sex...
** You don't have to hide your Fishing magazines..
** It is perfectly acceptable to pay a professional to Fish with you once in a while.
** The Ten Commandments don't say anything about Fishing.
** If your partner takes pictures or videotapes of you Fishing, you don't have to worry about them showing up on the Internet if you become famous.
** Your Fishing partner doesn't get upset about people you fished with long ago
** It's perfectly respectable to Fish with a total stranger.
** When you see a really good Fisherperson, you don't have feel guilty about imagining the two of you Fishing together.
** If your regular Fishing partner isn't available, he/she won't object if you Fish with someone else.
** Nobody will ever tell you that you will go blind if you Fish by yourself.
** When dealing with a Fishing pro, you never have to wonder if they are really an undercover cop.
** You can have a Fishing calendar on your wall at the office, tell Fishing jokes, and invite coworkers to Fish with you without getting sued for harassment.
** There are no Fishing-transmitted diseases.
** If you want to watch Fishing on television, you don't have to subscribe to the Playboy channel.
** Nobody expects you to Fish with the same partner for the rest of your life
** Nobody expects you to give up Fishing if your partner loses interest in it.
** Your Fishing partner will never say, "Not again? We just Fished last week! Is Fishing all you ever think about?"

Just got back form "up nort" hoping to hit the crappie spawn big time but the cold weather didnt help the water warm up,so no crappies but we did hit on plenty of post spawn walleye and a dandy largemouth. That was the first largemouth I ever caught on that lake.Seems I had forgotten how great a fight those five pounders can put up.

Bluegill fishing is real poor this summer by me. Sooo, I have been chasing northern pike lately. Caught a 32 incher yesterday and have 3 between 26-27" in the past two weeks. Once the weeds get back up to normal height, I am hoping that I can switch back over to bluegills once again. With that cool spring and high water levels, the weeds are way behind.

Added a 24" & 28" snake to the victim list. Going to take them by the folks tonight and cook them dinner. Sadly, I caught a 22" Largemouth today that hurt himself when he swallowed the bait. So, he will have a place of honor on the wall for the rest of his eternity. Also released a 16" Largemouth unhurt. Adult bluegills are still MIA and it's pizzin' me off.

Gman-its been awhile since Ive heard anyone call them "snakes". Guess I'd better get up "nort ' more often.Hoping to get up to the Cisco Chain in Boulder sometime in August to fetch those deep water walleyes cooling on the rock bars.

Yep, lately I have become a regular snake-charmer. Had never kept any since the 70's and those were chunked before smoking. I deep fried one some time back and now I am addicted. They taste better than walleye.
I picked up the snake thing when I was fishing in the Nisswa/Brainerd area with Marv Koep and his guides in the 70's & 80's.

During the sixties when we used to rent a cabin on Big Lake the resort owners kids used to laugh everytime we came back to the dock with any pike. I can still here them "Here come the snake lovers" I dont keep any on the stringer unless there arent any walleyes, bass or perch to put on it. To clean them I just take the slab off each side of the back....less bones that way. Havent been doing any fishing in the river. Brenda wont cook or eat anything out of it since the flood. To much septic and agricultural waste in there still.

Fileting a pike is a snap. Lots of videos out there on how to do it if you hunt around. Once you get the hang of it, you lose only about 5% of the filet weight when taking out the Y-bones.
They taste better than gills, perch or walleye IMHO.
This is easy stuff: Filet a Pike

Caught and released a pair of nice pike today. One at 32" and the other at 33-1/2". Both fish were caught in under 3 FOW. The bigger fish hit my spoon and took off like a salmon, screaming the drag on two long runs. Lots of fun...
Both fish were handled with care and gently released to fight another day.
