Meanwhile, the coach at Michigan waits for his contract to eventually get bought out so he can go coach elsewhere and basically make a double salary due to his failure.

If I remember correctly, the last time Cooper coached a game against Michigan and lost, there were riots in Columbus, and even some death threats against him.
While I am not condoning that kind of behavior from people, they did make a statement that enough was enough.

What finally did Cooper in, besides loosing to the team up North again, was...
1...it came out a starting wide receiver, Willie Germany, had a 0.00 GPA...never went to class that quarter, was suspended, and it happened without Cooper knowing about it...
2...South Carolina mauled the Bucks in that bowl game the same year...and the kid from SC, Ryan Brewer, who ran all over the Bucks in the game, had been Mr. football in Ohio his sr. yr., but Cooper didn't recruit him because even though he was a running back who set the new state record for most career rushing yards, he was...GASP....white!!!....
3...after all that, a bunch of big $$ donors said they wouldn't give another dime till Cooper was gone...
And that was that!!

The fact is, any of these guys could coach some small college somewhere if he chose to take the pay cut. All of these small colleges would clamor for someone with big game coaching experience. A lot of them don't bother, because they can't offer the $ it would take to bring guys like Cooper and the coach we do not speak of.
Look at Willingham's performance at Notre Dame. And look how easily he found another job.

True...at Washington...a major program...and he has em playing some decent ball..
On the other hand, no major program, or even minor major program, offered Cooper a job...
