Not heard too much about fedor, as he recently competed in (and won) the world sambo championships held in Russia/2008...He won VERY easily, and rumors were that he may fight on the new japanese fight show (cannot remember its name)...I really cannot believe that Dan Henderson lost to Anderson silva on saturday night tho!!!

Im a fan of the "old school" UFC.

The days of Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock. The days of no gloves and legal headbutts.

Dan Severn splitting Oleg Taktarovs head open, and watching Taktarov complain when the referee stopped the match. That was real fighting. I feel the UFC is becoming too soft these days. Too mainstream.

im a big fan and advocate of skill, technique, well-roundedness, and even matchups

i love the MMA of today, i loved old school UFC when it was out but i think this stuff is much better now, everyone has to be good or theyll never get close to being in any organization

When it started, it was meant to be like a street fight. Now it isnt much more than boxing.

......LJ, I respectfully disagree...I mean smaller gloves, elbows, knees, feet and submissions are quite a bit more than a boxing match...I do agree that it has softened up since it's start...But it wouldn't have became as mainstream and popular as it has if they didn't soften it up for the TV audience.

I just dont like all the new rules and regulations. They are trying to clean up a brutal sport and make it acceptable for mainstream america......something it was never intended to be in the first place.

Remember when almost every UFC fight faced controversy at the place of venue? Police attempting to prevent every event from taking place. Like they were shutting down dog fights. Now it is welcome into every home.....wonder why? Because it has been groomed and fluffed up. Kinda like fluffy, pretty poodles fighting instead of rugged pitbulls.

I just miss the good ol days.

if you think its groomed and fluffed up try training, lol

its a great sport and not a spectacle, by that logic youd agree that american football is a groomed and fluffed rugby game, ignoring the startegy and parity involved

i am personally glad to see the fighters that get paid 3000 to fight not have to have their heads cracked open or lose the ability to make children to earn it

Speaking of children......what do you think about Missouri passing (or working on passing) a law preventing children from participating in MMA competition. The news story I had seen made it look like they were using kids as pitbulls for their fighting pleasure.

Isnt that evidence that, perhaps, MMA has gotten a little too mainstream?
Now, you have soccer moms and MMA moms.

if it looked like they were in pitbull fighting arenas, then it is understandable that they pass that law.

however, the promotions that put on those event should be ashamed of themselves for how they promoted the sport and its unfortunate that thats what the state had at their employ to make such legislation

besides, the nation is warming up to two grown men fighting...its understandable that theyd be hesistant to sanction childrens competition. the nature of the sport and the preparation is somewhat brutal and they are probably worried that parents would start forcing children to do it like they do baseball, football, etc.

it takes time. i have no problem with the legislation, but the piss poor promoter that put on such fights and made mma look like a "pitbull fight"

Do you think there is a chance that those kids could do harm to their bodies at such a young age? You are still growing and developing at 8 yrs old, 10 yrs old, etc. Your joints have not fully formed into what they will be one day.

Is it really a good idea to apply joint locks and such on kids that young? Im not worried about the black eye or busted lip......that shit heals fine.....Im talking about real damage to the body foundation.

I think it could happen.

in most childrens competitions certain holds and moves are banned, so to make a fair assessment of that the rules of that particular fight need to be reviewed

hell in grown ass man grappling tournaments if competitors are below a certain level and experience things such as leglocks are banned

personally, as far as developing joints and things, check out young ballerinas and gymnasts

at least in mma there is the opportunity to tap, a respectful and prudent instructor and promotion would take this into account during their training regimens, which is why states are hesistant to sanction this type of competition amongst minors, adults may forseeably be hard asses unnecessarily

in places such as holland and india children under age 10 are competing in amateur kickboxing and muay thai competition, by the age of 15 they are competing professionally with adults

Boxing.....even kickboxing and muy thai, are not in the same class as MMA.

Particularly the gracie jui jitsu type schools (which most follow to some degree)......at the very least, you have to be able to defend in the guard and against joint locks.

Your ballerina/gymnast example is apples to oranges here. No one applies joint locks (forcing the joint in the wrong direction, for those who do not know what it is) to them. Arm bars.....knee and ankle locks......these can do serious damage, even to an adult body.

I took Karate for a few years, and one of the main principles they taught, was restraint. Never use what you learn, unless you absolutely have to. Im not so sure that is the mindset of most fly by night mma schools. They pop up everywhere, and are often run by people who just love to fight. I hope 8 yr old Billy doesnt go get an arm bar on Jimmy at recess!!

LJ only used what one has learned in defense. As a practitioner for over 20 years MHO is that all of these contest are for self gratification this goes against everything i personally have been taught one must always be humble and not draw attention to one's self.

lj in your post referenced physical damage

the manner in which the damage occurs is irrelevant, you referred to the damage and how children recover versus adults

and im not exactly sure where i said children should use what the learned outside the gym? i think you are skewing my argument into something no one has argued. i suggest you re-read my post or somethin man

im sorry that makes me mad...did i not mention restraint being taught in schools and integrated into the rules of competition?? did i not mention that it is more important that children be taught to show even more restraint

i freakin swear i did, man...i honestly have no idea where youre pullin this stuff from

Actually, I think the only reason alot of people get into mma, is so they can wrap their legs around a sweaty man.
