if its you that says you're in good health then, i'd advise you to see a professional and get a thorough check up and even a stress test before you do anything you might regret!

right Has2!!! Sunshine ,a qualified Dr. is your best place to start cuz weight lifting for anyone our age is a big deal .Those plates, dumbells ,bars and varied workouts don't appear hard but consider that you are using every muscle in your body to balance those weights(freewights)...you don't need or want a senseless injury!
Using the balanced system of weiths on a weight machine is more your ticket...but you STILL should seak the advise of a dr..

It should not be a problem, but do get the physical first and tell your doc about your plans. If you are not experience in lifting, then I highly recommend that you use the services of a personal trainer, at least at the outset. He will teach you proper training techniques and set up a routine for you to help you achieve your goals.

Keep in mind, your body does not recover as quickly as it once did, so start slow and build up over time. Good luck to you.

I was pushing 60 when I started some 5 years ago, and I've had serious back problems all my life. I'm using machines, not free weights, and it's superslow, with a personal trainer (10 seconds in each direction for each rep). Anyway, back problems have become a thing of the past - building the core muscles did wonders. I'll never be a Ms. Universe, but I leg press nearly 250 pounds and chest press 75, which I feel is pretty respectable for a 64 year old lifelong desk jockey.
