Hockey is where you tell a bunch of people to bring over some skates and wear lots of clothing for warmth for a get-together on a patch of real slick ice.You give them each a weapon, usually a good sturdy stick and then throw in a missle about twice the size of a can of Redman chewin tabacky thats made out of unbreakable hard stuff like cast iron. Invite them all to try and hit that missle into a goal about 1/3 the size of a soccer goal while other people with those sturdy clubs..er sticks tries to stop them. Because its cold remember to supply plenty of Rum,a fine beverage to provide for that bunch of people.

Theres a small puck. They have to hit this puck into a net with big sticks.
If you can tell what is going on while watching then you might be a fan.

I feel like I could truly appreciate this sport, even if these people have no plausible reason to be fighting with one another. Thank you =D

I have seen it. It was a busy place before they lost too. I look forward to living here except I will have to go to San Diego for pro football.

Growing up in the Detroit area and playing this sport for 18 years I can honestly says, it was by far one of the best experiences in my younger years. Now though, in my 40's...the chickens are coming home to roost...wrecked ankles and sore knees.
It is however, one of the few sports that enjoys rabid fan support. The NHL doesn't have a major TV contract, yet the league seems year after year to stand well enough on its own.
This past season, I finished watching my hometown Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup yet again. Their opponent, the Pittsburge Penguins...a rather small market team...enjoyed a season of sellouts in one of the leagues oldest arenas. That is the difference between this sport and others. Fan support other leagues could only dream about.

If you've got a young son and want to ensure that you've minimized his chances of developing into a feminine pansy....get him into this sport!! LOL

It's a great game that requires you to be in top shape. Do you see the refs ever getting a rest unless it's a commercial time-out? The fighting is needed to protect your star players. You get an asshole who hits your star or future star player you send the enforcer after them.
The game has changed the golden era....the players today are faster, bigger and the equipment is much better. I ordered a throwback jersey from the Red Wings....thinking it was going to be the same material as today....WRONG!!! It was an actual sweater.....wool....itchy and not breathable. How those players of back then didn't pass out is beyond me? Tough guys back then!

Not to mention no helmets!!! I absolutely love watching when they show some real old games - the skating was awesome in all the ones I've watched.

Hockey is a true team sport. Since offense and defense is changing so quickly, all the players must be on top of their game, or the score can easily get out of hand.
The way penalties are handed out, or playing short handed. Off sides, you cannot enter " the zone " or cross the blueline before the puck. All the rules, well, they are just well thought out.
It is a fascinating game, and much better live, but it may be best to understand the rules ( by watching tv first ).
I too, was born in Detroit, and played for many years. The Red Wings are one of the oldest American teams, they have a rich history, and they put a tear in this old mans eye when they prove they are the best.
The original teams played with only a few men. No helmets or face masks, little padding. The goalie used to lay his bare face on the ice to see around the screen in front of him. Only to be hauled off the ice, his face stitched, and put back out there to finish the game. Most hockey players were very easy to recognize, all of them were missing teeth.
I lost mine a few times, thats what you get when you are the goalie...Or, as my mom called me, the " human target ".
Go Wings !!!!!!!!!! And Griffins, ( the local team ) where many of the Wings start out.
