Wow.

http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=903519

My first thought is.....thats football, but I really need to know more of the facts about this case.

If I was the coaches lawyer, I would be preparing information about football practicing standards around the nation, getting information about the kids previous medical history (who signed off on his physical?), and also information about team-mates who "survived" practice. Why was there only one who died?

Tragic, but is it really the coaches fault? Is there only one coach?

The story says "on a very hot day", but CNN said that with the heat index, it was 94. Thats definitely not "hot" by Texas standards.

It said his body temperature was 107. That sounds like he had a fever already or something was going on.

Nope. Not for Texas.

Hell, we spend months at a time over (or close to) 100, and thats real temperature, not counting the heat index. So humid you can feel your body evaporating.

Of course thats why I get to enjoy winter days like today......75. Its a trade-off.

I gonna guess there's likely more to this story than what's come out so far. No idea what. Unfortunately every so often a kid does die in practice. It's usually dismissed as the tragic accident it is and that's the end of it. So for this much to made of it, I'm thinking there about has to be something more to the story.

I noticed the kid was a sophomore and as hot as it was it was probably during preseason 2 a days, which are always a bitch to get through no matter how much you love the game.

The only way I could see the coach at fault is if the kid was doing something different from the rest of the team. Like running for punishment or something.

If he was in the same lineman drills with everyone else, there is no reason he should fall out when everyone else was still standing. It will be interesting to see what the team mates have to say about it.

Either way, theres no way I could believe this coach meant to hurt or kill anyone.

I read a more in depth article which said the kid's parents have already sued. So maybe this whole "criminal" thing has something to do with that.

I dont think that will be an issue the the prosecuting attorney will even use unless he had definate proof that the coach did mean to hurt or kill that athelete.
Without proof his case would have to be based on proof of the coach causing accidental personal injury.
If the boy passed a physical to participate and was not forced to practice harder than any other teammate in the hot weather a good defense attorney will simply make the prosecuter prove the fault is on the coach and not the schools athletic dept.
Without a reason proving the coach was at fault it will get thrown out of court and the prosecuting attorney will then go after the school.
In the end the schools insurance company will settle out of court with the prosecuting attorney making a ton of money, the family of the dead athlete will get a little and the school taxpayers will be paying higher insurance premiums...for an accident in the rough but voluntary sport of highschool football.

As long as the coach didn't single the kid out unfairly and/or unnecessarily, I can't see how he coached is all that relevant...attitude adjustments are part of coaching, and some need em, some don't...

I came into high school ball as a sophomore thinking I was hot sht...Third day in I ran nothing but laps and windsprints for the next 3 three straight 2 a days while everyone else practiced. My attitude was quickly, properly & permanently adjusted!!! And that was back in the dark ages, when there was no such thing as water or ice on the practice field, and coaches routinely gave guys a motivating "love kick" in the butt from time to time as needed...

I remember doing bear crawls across a practice field full of sticker burrs for entire practice sessions at a time.

Remember when you would get the breath knocked out of you, you're laying on your back gasping for breath and the coach would "fix it" by grabbing your belt and pulling you up and down while everyone stood around in a circle watching? Thats football!!!!

Yep....

Then there was that "love tap" up side of your helmet when you missed a tackle or a block or an assignment in practice!!!...definitely got your undivided attention....

Oh yeah, and God forbid the coach ever catches you sitting on your "hat".

The week before acyual practice started. It was called "Hell week" If you didn't throw up. you weren't working ahrd enough.
I remember how my son looked too.( yes, he learned not to eat much before this too)
In Michigan this started in early August and it was very hot, with humidity almost as high.

This seems to happen every year some where though.

The coach was just acquitted. There is still justice in the world!!

The jury deliberated only 90 minutes. As I understand it, the kid had some kind of medical condition and either the condition itself or the medicine he took for it was likely the primary cause of his death and because of that condition, the kid maybe never should have been playing ball in the first place...or something like that.

Sounds like maybe the parents of the kid, and if necessary the legal system, should have directed their vengeance at the doctor who approved their kid to be fit to play ball....if any vengeance was ever appropriate in the first place.

It's a tragedy anytime a kid dies in a situation like this. But it's at least an equal tragedy to try to blame someone, and in the process wreck another family, over something that at least should have been medically investigated in more depth before charges were ever filed in the first place. Seems it could have likely been proven to be an accident BEFORE those involved saw fit to trash the coaches life.

Accidents...accidents WITHOUT blame...really do happen!!

JMHO.....

yes, there was definatly a problem before this practice. he was either sick, or from what I am hearing he did take the herbal type muscle builders too.
So, the thing that got to me was, the coach made them practice with out water?
Plus, how long was the practice?
During "Hell week" the practice was not a true practice. It was illegal for it in school.
So, it was an optional hour of nothing but running, and sprints. ONE HOUR.

So, the pain this family is going through I do so understand, they need to blame someone in their time of mourning.
