Last Wednesday, July 1, former featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight world boxing champion Alexis Arguello was found dead in his home. Apparently it was suicide from a self inflicted gunshot through the heart.. He was 57 yrs. old.

His first fight with Aaron Pryor is the 2nd greatest fight I've ever seen (the best ever in my opinion was the first Arturo Gatti/Irish Micky Ward bout)

Aaron Pryor recounts that memorable fight HERE

One of my fondest memories to this day is as a very young kid getting to stay up late on Friday night and watch the Gillette Friday Night Fights with my dad...

The sport itself is great...IMO the ultimate in self discipline...

Unfortunately, pay-per-view, 37 different championship belts in each weight division, and the likes of Don King, have all but killed it...

Unfortunately, it seems that this is a trend that has no end.

Vernon Forrest, a former two-division champion who gained stardom when he became the first boxer to defeat Shane Mosley, was shot to death in what police are calling an attempted robbery. Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes said in an e-mail Sunday that the 38-year-old Forrest was shot several times in the back late Saturday night on a street just southwest of downtown. Keyes said there were no suspects.

Forrest, a native of Augusta, Ga., who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team along with Oscar De La Hoya. The popular Forrest later won welterweight and junior middleweight titles and compiled a professional record of 41-3 with 29 knockouts.

I read about Forrest this morning...He was good...took care of "Sugar" Shane Mosley twice....

I just found out that that Arturo Gatti was killed by his lady friend recently...Toss up between him & "Little Red" Danny Lopez who was the best at Taking a licking & keeping on ticking.....

Vernon Forrest was one of the good guys in the sporting world. Giving back to his community, kids and the disabled. Sad to know some thug ended his life !
He was one heck of a boxer.
