Today I talked to a man who is 54 and is searching hard and heavy for his next wife because his years are numbered. He's in good health but he bases this on the fact that his father worked himself to death at age 50. Then I read the desperation thread and found the same type of thoughts. I'm 53 and this is a very foreign concept to me. Both sides of my family have lived well into their 80's or 90's so I've always assumed that I would have a long life as well. Besides, I FEEL like I'm in my 30's and wince at the term "middle age" so how can I be old?
I'm guessing most of the people who post here agree with me, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Do you feel like the years ahead are fewer and fewer, or do you celebrate each birthday as a victory over Father Time?

Mostly I'm having too good a time to think about it much...in my head I'm still probbly about 16 or so...still deciding what I want to be when I grow up yanno.
Dad died at 67, mom at 72...however dad was semi-starved during his childhood in Germany and mom was a chain-smoking two-fisted alcoholic for most of her life. I figure none of us'll get out of here alive and one thing I'm NOT gonna do is waste time worrying about it.

Some people may have reasons to feel more preoccupied about getting "old" than others, like your friend, but I think if one takes good care of oneself and keeps a youthful perspective (read: stay fairly flexible and adaptable and have a sense of humor, etc.) age is really a number. When I turned 50 I worried how others were going to perceive me when they heard "the number" but I soon decided if anyone wanted to judge me by the years I've been on this earth, well, that's their problem, not mine. There are people that in 30+ years put more wear and tear on their bodies (by doing drugs, drinking and smoking excessively and choosing other risky lifestyle habits) than I have on mine so it would be silly to even compare.

50 OLD!!!! I think not.......I am 45 years old, I honestly do not feel it, I like to think I don't look it either (I could be wrong). Mind you, I don't feel like I did when I was 18 either. I have always been of the opinion you are only as old as you feel. In my mind......I'm 35. It didn't bother me to turn 40 or 45. It is just a number. I am looking forward to turning 50, in fact (I've told my family this) if they don't throw me a surprise party, I'm planning it myself. (Annie.....I'll send you an invitation, we'll have margaritas).

..Guess being 59...should be considered OLD..
But its how you take care yourself, how you live your life.. ..and most important what's in your heart, that truly determines your age.
In doggie years I am only 8......

Annie, my birthday is next month too. What day? 15th here.....I'll be 52. I won't comment on the "age" thing because in some ways I'm much older than all of you guys, and in some ways, I'm still an ignorant child.

I have to say all you ladies in your 50's not only look GREAT but also have a wonderful mind set and attitude.......It's not the number of years....its how the mind perceives living life. Some can be old at 30 and some never grow "OLD" even at 80 and 90.....its all in the mind.......Me, most of the time.....I'm 35 again...wanting to see and experience every thing this great world and a relationship with the right mate....has to offer..... .
Now if I could just find the man.....with the "little boy" who wants to come out and play with my "little girl" grin .......we could make some wonderful music with the years we have left...to enjoy together...
Till then.....I'll just let everyone....try to guess...what kinda fun I'm having finding out just who I am...as I get some years of experience behind me....
btw I think I'm about the oldest in dog years in the crowd.....

And THAT is exactly what I think being over 50 is about! Good advice Sissy ...even if you are the oldest dog in the bunch!
OOps...I meant that as a compliment!
And thank you Doug!

btw I think I'm about the oldest in dog years in the crowd..... Sissy...nope, we're the same age, and neither of us is the oldest...not that it matters. I'm younger now than I was at 24 in a zillion different ways. I think I felt older then than any other time in my life! There are no guarantees on anything in this world, so enjoy the good and endure the bad, knowing that nothing ever stays the same....just keep doing everything you can to make it better!

Jaded...that's an odd one all right! Huge difference in ages, but if there weren't, too bad they couldn't have each paired off differently (always really felt bad that my dad was so shortchanged...he deserved sainthood for sure!)
