I was down at the Harley dealer this afternoon, and the salesman I was talking to said that about 80% of their customers are between 40-60 years old. This kind of surprised me. I was talking to them about trading in my Goldwing on a VRSC when he started telling me about how many he sold to us "older guys".
So what do you think, is buying a Harley a sign of getting old now? Or is just that Harleys have gotten so expensive that we are the only ones that can afford them?

The "being able to afford them" is a DEFINITE factor these days! (I always laughed when people referred to "biker BUMS"...dropping $25-35K on a bike sure ain't peanuts )
And a Harley has a much different image than a GoldWing...GoldWingers are considered much more..."conservative" , something a lot of "older guys" have decided to get away from -- let the "bad boy" out!
Some of the married "older guys" go for the "Mid-Life Harley" rather than the "Mid-Life Girlfriend" I told my ex and his weekend warrior "gang" that they belonged to the "Over-the-HillsAngels"

I've noticed that a LOT of women's ads mention how much they like to ride lately. I never saw those even just 2 years ago.

I've noticed that a LOT of women's ads mention how much they like to ride lately. Yeh, but they didn't fall OFF a Harley yet Kinda loses the allure when the old tricky-hip is a constant reminder forever-after

hey touch, i own both but i doubt i would buy another harley, they are the spawn of the devil, but women seem to like them for the wrong reasons. my honda is smoother, faster, stops better and is more reliable than the vibration from milwalkee.

Old guys and Harleys especially old guys with beards, moustaches, broad shoulders, and furry chests on Harleys Why do I think of that as an x-rated topic? So so shallow I am.

Keeno, I agree that my wing is a much better touring bike, and it has almost 100k on it, but I don't plan on doing anymore bike tours, so I'm thinking something flashy for cruising.
BTW I posted this same question about Harleys and old guys on some Yahoo groups about bikes, and the answers were pretty much uniform. Almost all the guys 35 and younger only ride sport bikes, and think Harleys are for "old, fat posers" as one guy put it. Another called them "granpa bikes". But the older guys were just as down on sport bikes, calling them "crotchless rockets", "rice burner junk", and "Japan boy racer trash" while they were all for Harleys. So I guess it really is a generational thing. Kind of makes you wonder what's going to happen to Harley-Davidson when the boomers get too old to ride.

hey touch, my honda is a crotch rocket, good for 150 mph, my harley is a street tracker, good for 100 mph but the "baggers" that the old foggies ride can't keep up.
if you want to ride a couch, stay home.
oh i'm 58, does that count as old?
maybe the bikes are keeping me young....

I've been seriously looking at a VRSC myself, but $22k for a bike is a little much.

i think you can find some new old stock for cheaper if you look around, or buy low milage used, i met a guy from mich. this summer he paid 3300 for a chrome swing arm, for his v-rod. yikes, dress up parts will kill you to "make it your own"the harley "individual" mentality escapes me, they all look the same to me, black leather and a dealership t-shirt, or a vest with pins of the places they've trailered their bike too.
i love teasing these people when i meet them on the road, or listening to how fast their bikes are in the bar, i always say, "didn't i pass you on the way here?"
can you tell i love not fitting in?
i figure as long as your still ridding, it's all good.

Yeah, riding is all good, and I'm not looking for fast or I'd buy a sport bike. Just something to tool around town on, and of all the Harleys I like the way the VRSC looks the best.

It shouldn't be hard to guess what I ride. Ithought iwould mention that 45 to 55 year old riders have more accidents than any other age group. this is because somebody that rode an old honda in their 20's, thinks that because they can afford a Harley, they can just jump on one and ride it. (I'm not dogging any long-time riders here, but facts are facts.)

Yeah, that's part of the reason why. But also, your reflexes, eyesight, and balance get worse with age. And a lot of guys buy bikes that are too big for them to handle. Ever see a 140lb guy trying to muscle a 900lb bike around? Wonder why he can't keep it from dropping while he's parking it?
