Last month, as some of you know, quite suddenly I found myself unemployed. With no stockpile of funds, and, as Beach so aptly puts it, "not a 401-K in the house," I was panicky with fright. Last week, after the holidays, I began my earnest search for a job, and I am amazed at how thrilled and excited I am at the prospect of a NEW life. I feel like a new person after finally escaping from that dark cloud of a job I held for six years. Of course, money is still a problem, and I sure hope I can pay next month's rent, but I feel like I have a new lease on life. I know others are also making big changes in their careers, and some are even moving cross-country ( ) so I send out kudos to us brave souls facing the unknown. We didn't get this far for nothing!

Good for you Door...I'm proud for ya. I was told at the end of '05 that the owners were retiring where I work...so I no longer had a job after 29 years. Luckily I had a job down the street doing the same thing the next day. So things WILL look up!

Way to go Door! Just keep thinking about the things you want to accomplish - the rent will be paid, the food will be bought and the internet access charges will be found (priorities, right?)...and you'll be even closer to being the person you want to be (okay, you already are...you'll just be closer to really realizing that!)

I can't tell you how happy I am for you Door! I left a rotten job 2 years ago and I KNOW it made a huge difference in my life. Your attitude about a bright and shining future will show too, and any prospective employers will pick up on that right away.
Happy 2007 g/f ---its your year to SHINE!

Door you sound just like a friend of mine. She lost her teaching job and has not been able to find one for this school year. She is living on faith and the little she had in retirement. I pray for her daily that she finds the right job. I will add you to the prayer list. I went through this in my 30s when I, along with several friends, quit my teaching job to find something else. They all did and I went back to the same job in the same school!! Apparently I was still needed there. I have been there for 29 yrs now but dang! Things in public schools have sure changed. I'm giving myself a few more years, then on to something different. Best of luck in your search and know many are with you in spirit in your hunt. Signme

Hey Door! Sorry you lost your job, but I am so happy for you that you have such a great attitude now! It's a scary thing.... but it looks like you've turned it around into an "adventure"! I wish you all the luck in the world in finding exactly what you want!!
I, too, am looking for a new job. I've needed a change for a long time, unfortunately, the job market around here is not good.... and at this moment I don't have the luxury of being able to relocate (son stuff). But I am thankful that, even though I don't like my job, that I have one!!!!!
You go girlfriend!!!!

I will be out of a job soon because the governor is privatizing our jobs. I really like my job so I'm not thrilled about it and I also know it's not going to work and it will definitely hurt most of my clients and will cost the taxpayers of Indiana lots of money for an experiment that hasn't worked in any other state it's been tried in. Texas is still trying to recover from their fiasco with privatization. There have been other times in my life where I was just as excited as you, Doorwatcher, to be forced to look for a new job. It's terrible to have to go to work day after day to a job you don't like. I had considered myself very fortunate to have found a job that seemed to suit me perfectly. I never would have imagined I would be a public assistance caseworker since I had the negative image most people who have to work for a living have of people on public assistance. I found out most of our clients are doing the very best they can because of mental, physical, emotional, or social problems that are worse than the average person's. It's also why I know many of them can't apply online or by phone. It's not within their capabilities for various reasons. Their caseworker is also one of the few people they can talk to without being judged or looked down on. I'm hoping I can find another job that is as satisfying emotionally as my current job, but it would be great if my workload was a little less and my pay more.

Congratulations on your new job, I'm so happy for you! It seems so much harder these days being in my 50s looking for work as I am competing with girls and guys in their 20s, but...the pursuit continues.
Good luck to all those out there unemployed and looking, keeping my fingers crossed for you.

luneib- those people in their 20's and 30's dont know how to work like we do- i am not saying all of them- but most that work with me, bitch, moan and complain all the time- one girl came to work and left 20 minutes later telling me that the job was just not for her easy job, too- i wonder what she will do when Mommie and Daddy are no longer aroung to take care of her- the real world is going to be a big reality jolt for her!!!

Door, I rarely come into this thread and saw your post. I don't know why I don't because it "fits" me...lol. I'm sorry about your job but you will find another one. I rejoice with you in your "prospect of a NEW life" and know you will suceed in whatever you do. You are smart and have what it takes to make a go of it. I too am thinking about finding a job in '07 but not sure if it will be in nursing. I am still so burned out even after not working for a year. Don't know if I EVER would want to be charge/med nurse on a hall with 36-40 residents again! Nursing is not what it was when I got into it 40 years ago, too much stress and paperwork now. I think I would be happy working at Target, Lowe's or Walmart. Good luck to us both...

Thanks, Red. I sure need it. I haven't heard from a single place. It's hard to keep a positive outlook.

I know how hard this can be after a "certain" age. When I started looking for work over a year ago, I managed to get two interviews and no other calls on probably 50 resumes. I finally got a job via word of mouth. I stayed there 4 months and found a better one via word of mouth.
Contacts...tell everyone you know from your mailman to your hairdresser that you are looking for work. You might be surprised at what turns up. Good luck!!!

Best place to find a job is by working. Doesn't matter what you do or what your speciatly is, go to where the gigs are and get a job delivering mail, papers, flipping burgers, selling smokes. just get there and be seen doing something. Then, when they least suspect, ask them why they are having the problem with so and so in wherever or, why they haven't done this or that.
And, let the other people you work with work for you by them wandering around doing their thing saying 'hey, we know a gal that works with us and she does just that'
Course, this is from a guy that when unemployed, goes quading and gets drunk until he's tired of it. so what do i know?
