Thanks, SunBun.

...and luneib too. And WaterLily AS40 too!

Good luck to us all.

By the way, let me thank everyone once again for the encouragement. I know each of us appreciates a supportive word or sentiment.

I was just told the other day that being smart is a drawback because it is a threat to the person's job that is doing the hiring.

You know I hate looking for a job worse than working itself. And I want to think I'm very particular about the type of work I do. Yet, when I'm hungry, there's always A job out there somewhere. But if you know what you want to do, make a list of the possibilities, follow up with phone calls to set up interviews. And don't forget to be an interviewer, ask relavent questions. That's BS not to be as smart as you are.

Good luck in your search Door!!!!

You DON'T want to work for anyone who thinks that way anyway...it's soul destroying and won't last anyway. You want to be with competent people, who feed off each others' successes, and you definitely want a boss who's looking for someone who CAN do his or her job, either as backup or to be their replacement when THEY get a promotion.

But if you know what you want to do, make a list of the possibilities, follow up with phone calls to set up interviews

NS is right - start with what you want to do, as well as looking to see what's available. And keep talking to people - you just never know where it can lead, just absolutely KNOW that you're going to find what you love and do it well.

(I'm still pullin' for you, Door ~sigh~ you and Daisy and LibraInManasas and now CandyLily )

And Horselady too...

Thanks, Heaven. I didn't mean to omit HorseLady. ALL of us need these boosts of encouragement so graciously given by yous guys. (In honor of New Jersey Mike... )

One more thing, I have started with what I think I want to do -- Administrative -- rather than teach. I realize I'll have to start at the bottom but I enjoy 'clerical' work and I'm actually darn good at it. More than I can say for grading papers.

Door -- the fact that you enjoy clerical work is great. A lot of people get into that area either as a way to move up within a company or as something to do until their dream job becomes available, so this will be an asset for you. Be sure to point out that you are happy doing paperwork...so many people hate it and if you can be someone's right hand, that's even better.

Door, if you are still looking for a job you may want to consider working as a temp. Shop around for some agencies that offer a decent hourly wage. You can set your own hours (based on the need of the employer/agency), learn new skills, and get a feel for an area you may want to pursue.

Starting over again is challenging but it can be done. If you do not mind working for American companies outside the USA for a short/long period you may want to check out Dubai (take a look at the website) also other locations around the world.

Some temp agencies even provide group rates on benefits after a certain number of hours, I'm told.

Just wondering how it's going now, Door. I will be looking to go back to work again soon---had some expensive legal setbacks late in '07. Am thinking it may not be in my favor to have this two year gap in employment. Good timing (for me anyway) to see this thread 'revived'.

I haven't heard from a single place. It's hard to keep a positive outlook
.............I can understand this......its the same with many things in life that are important to us........BUT YOU HAVE TO KEEP PRACITICING.......meaning...still keep looking and applying and dont give up. Being out of work is scarey......it affects our security. Sometimes many of us have to choose different career paths.....sometimes there is no other option. But whatever happens.....DONT LET YOUR SPRIT GET TOO DOWN.......you wont starve.....you have a roof over your head........and you probably have a whole string of options that you havent even thought of or looked at. Maybe you could try to make a list of options you DO have........even if you dont like any of them. That way.......you wont scare yourself to death at the prospect of the future looking bleak. JUST A THOUGHT ....but I really DO feel for you!

That taking any kind of work temporarily DOES work. I promise. I had that happen. After taking a job at a stinky bait camp handling bait, my other work opened up again. I was trying to figure out how to quit nicely when they told me they wanted to hire someone closer to there place that really needed a job badly.
When I told them I needed to quit because my real money was coming back, they were so relieved. They sure did help me out when I needed it tho. I appreciated them so much and told them how much they really helped me. It was a wonderful thing for all of us.

I quit a job I hated about a year ago and it was a huge relief. It was absolutely the right decision but one thing I did learn from that job was how generally inferior the the younger workers are. They had no work ethic, whined about nothing, were not reliable, were ignorant and were no better at the actual work itself. I know my value now and that confidence is a useful tool. Despite being much better workers, the reality is that we have to prove ourselves to potential employers. We have to come off as energetic, dynamic, healthy, confident, lifelong learners, blah, blah, blah. You have to be up on the latest theories and know what questions to ask, you don't want to look like a pushover. Of course you also have to be stylishly dressed according to current fashion, interpreted in an age appropriate manner. Yes, it's all quite demanding and yes, you'll be the second choice for many but persevere and you WILL find something. Stock up on vitamins and health supplements, get some ideas for interview questions to ask and be prepared for from websites like monster, workopolis etc., if you have any aches and pains, make sure you use an odour-free cream like Myoflex or whatever - you don't want to smell like an old lady. If you are between salon trips, touch up your roots with either dye like Colorsilk Root Perfect or a dry stick like Roux "Tween Time. If you have anything that tightens your skin like model's secret, sudden change or whatever, definitely use it for the interview. Anything to stop them focusing on your age. You don't want them getting distracted. Total crap I know but it works. and hey, think of starting your own home business. It can be a great way to supplement your income and has the potential to grow into a viable income should you ever need it but make sure to invest in a good insurance plan to replace the one you lose from your regular job if you decide to go for it full-time. Good luck

I love being 50.........well 51 now! I have decided to embark on a career change and am to go back to school. I don't want to be in any more managerial positions, I want less stress now at this point in time.

AMEN SISTAH!! Good luck!

I was 60 when I dropped out of management. Since I'm still a SME (subject matter expert) there's still stress - hopefully not for too much longer - now I'm thinking about learning how to mat/frame artwork - I already have a studio that was used for that (including glass, frames and mats) as a retirement part-time job.

Has anyone here started their own home business? I'm seriously looking into it, but am not finding anything that excites me enough to go for it. (maybe this needs to be a new thread?)
