I do not know why thse things have to be associated with men... it's not about taking a break from men as in the "pause" of the word. They should have better words for those things. Puberty is when those things awaken that mid life puts to sleep... the raging hormones and all that... it should be called something else.
I have peri menapause and other than occasional hot flashes ( once ot twice a year) I do not have any symptoms.
I know several women who have gone through the change and the stories really vary greatly from emotional crisis and severe changes in personality to little more than hot flashes.
It could be that we percieve things about menapause that may not be true. it is just a change as was puberty... a natural change that any healthy woman will go through sooner or later.
Women who go through surgically induced menapause ( having ovaries removed) maybe have it the worse as the change would be very sudden, inlike the natural slowing of hormones over a decade. I feel they would have a far worse and severe reaction than a natural non surgical menapause.

Definitely different for every woman...for me it was early and sudden. I was 41 and going through some stressful stuff (Mom had cancer, I was caretaker), and it was about 2 months after she died that it occurred to me that I hadn't had a period in months. So, no hot flashes or anything...that was the up side. The down side was that my immune system went right along with it, as the premature menopause was eventually determined to have been caused by the fact that I'd developed diabetes. So some silver linings come equipped with clouds...

Oh, don't even mention hot flashes. I thought I had cruised through the first year with little worry, and then BAM! I was on fire. Not a pleasant situation, to say the least. I did read where a doctor advised women to take an extra set of clothes with them at all times. Thank goodness I don't have them that bad. But one good thing I can say....No Cramps!!!

That's another part of the up side of getting it over with early...I'm long done with 'sharing the pain'...

Everything's comin' up roses....

I had terrible cramps and bleeding for about 15 years. It was so bad, throwing out tennis ball size black clumps, such severe anemia, they would not even operate to remove my uterus until I brought up my blood- iron supplements and diet.
I was so freaking tired and worn feeling. No energy at all not to mention severe cramps that had me in bed 2 weeks out of the month while I bled heavily 25 days out of 30. I would have to change kotex ( super heavy duty every hour while at work) or else blood would literally run down my legs and fill my shoes. One day at work I passed out. I had several fibroids, endometrosis and severe adheshions. They finally did surgery on me.
I was so happy to get surgery because I wanted to either die or get well....

5 days after they took my uterus ( was able to keep my ovaries so I am not taking meds for that ) ... I felt so good, I wanted to mow the lawn. I did and I just kept working and moving because it was the first time in YEARS I could move pain free and not be all tired after walking.
Was a new lease on life.
After that... my honest feelings are......

whats to fear with menapause ?
It certainly cannot be worse than being like an old elderly invalid, like I was before my hysterectomy.
I fear nothing anymore least of all menapause.

Its a natural thing you know.... nothing to be ashamed of and a little bitchin' never killed anyone :)

Sorry, I just read this and broke out laughing....I kinda suspect that I was just as guilty as my kids' dad...he had his faults, but in this I was a very willing co-conspirator!

Oh, and by the way, on the subject of mood swings?

My husband, being unhappy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the other day so he would be able to monitor my moods.

We’ve discovered that when I’m in a good mood, it turns green.

When I’m in a bad mood, it leaves a big f***ing red mark on his forehead.

Maybe next time he’ll buy me a diamond.
