Fosamex, I need a natural alternative

I went for my pap test today, my doctor prescibed Fosamex, said I needed it, so...I got the prescription filled, $83.00 for 4 pills! I was in shock to say the least. I can't afford this stuff. Does anyone use anything in place of Fosamex to make their bones strong, not lose calcium? I need a natural alternative which won't cost me a fortune to buy.

Thanx!

I just read this about Fosamex which does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

In order to balance the loss of bone density caused by disease, aging, or osteoporosis, many doctors prescribe a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. These medications are commonly marketed as Fosamax, Aredia, Zometa, Boniva and Actonel. The most common recipients of these types of drugs are women in their late 40's and older who have reached menopause and have begun to experience loss of bone density due to the aging process. In addition, some chemotherapy treatments for cancer that has advanced into the bones include bisphosphonates.

Use of these medications has recently been linked to cases of jaw bone decay or osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). ONJ or "dead jaw" is a rare bone disease in which the jaw bone deteriorates and dies. To repair jaw bone damage, a painful surgery is required to remove dying bone tissue. Side effects include jaw pain, numbness, exposed oral bones, loss of teeth, and infection.

Hmmmm, now I am stuck with the prescription I just got, they are only 4 pills, but geeez, shouldn't this stuff be taken off the market???

Did you have a Bone Density test that showed bone loss?
I would want to know if I had any damage first.
If Fosamax was prescribed as a preventative I would just increase my weight lifting
routine. Proven to help build bone mass. Osteoarthritis is not an acute condition,
it usually progresses slowly.

Bone is living tissue. Fosamex does not allow older bone to be disposed of. New bone growth needs to be enhanced. Sometimes just taking calcium doesn't help as there is a problem in utilizing calcium. Magnesium controls the parathyroid gland and the parathyroid gland controls calcium....Magnesium Citrate and or Magnesium amino acid chelate form are the types that help utilize a good form of calcium supplementation. There is more to this study of bone development, the biggest problem is to make the calcium bioavailble for the body to use. Magnesium is important for this. It is important to find out if calcium is being used to buffer toxic metals instead of being utilized in the bone. Demineralization of the bone could be a compensating symptom to solve another problem in the body.(toxic metals, adrenal problems not allowing minerals to stay in solution) Hope this helps just to know there is more to it...I know some one that took Fosamex and a bad calcium supplement(calcium carbonate, not good) and it did fracture her jaw.

Definitely get another opinion.....preferably from someone who does holistic (sp?) medicine...

And remember, too often doctors prescribe what the drug reps push...and sometimes docs get kickbacks for how often they prescribe a particular drug...

Yeh kickbacks you are right. She was quick to prescribe that. I believe in holistic medicine, prefer it.

What about calcium citrate combined with a 2 to 1 ratio of magnesium...with or without Vit.D(depending upon location....season...etc)
There's no guarantee but I prefer mine from the health food store.

Read today that excercise increases bone density....but that's only for the desperate

I am taking Calcium Citrate now and so far so good. I don't know if it is helping, but I imagine it is. At least it is natural and affordable.

I love milk and milk products. I rarely drink colas, they leach calcium from your body.

Unfortunately, there is no sufficiently effective "natural" alternative for Fosamax.

Calcium citrate and magnesium may be useful for some people (Vitamine D3 should be taken with calcium too), but if you have a bone density loss that is serious enough to need a prescription drug like Fosamax, you may be headed for serious problems if you don't take it.

Bone loss is a slow process. So taking something else might seem fine for a while, but you really cannot tell anything over a short period of time.

The real question is the interpretation of your bone density test. For that you might want another opinion. If you need something like Fosamax, and you don't take it, you could be headed for some real problems down the road. No "natural" methods can replace it.

First off, do not drink any soda drinks. It leaches calcium from your bones in order to digest it. It imbalances your minerals. Not all calciums are the same. Not all people digest all supplements the same. Most drugstore brands are trash. Many so called health food stores have trash as well. You need to have kinesiology (muscle testing) by someone that is NOT selling supplements to find what is right for you. If they are selling something, most likely they are not neutral.
Also, if you eat or drink a lot of something that imbalaces your minerals, it will have the same affect of leaching. Many drugs the Dr gives you does stuff like that.
Find some massage therapist that does not want to sell you something to test you on different things. Many of them are trained and really do not want to sell. I do my own muscle testing. To get it to work properly, you have to have strong statements that are balanced.
Like...Is this supplement 40% or more positive for me towards correcting any bone density problems I may have now? Is this supplement 40% or more positive to help me maintain good bone density? You also need to ask questions like, is this supplement all I need to correct and maintain. ect.
Then if you have several supplements, test them together , check to see if they SHOULD be taken together, and test for how many to take and how often. Often you will get a real high number in the beginning. Never take large numbers. Your body is just hungry and greedy. It is usually just real excited that you are talking to it and listening. After taking the supplements for a week or so is better to retest.
It really helps to have someone trained to consult with. Otherwise you may needlessly buy things that will not really benefit you.
Now, you have to recheck after about a month and make sure those are still the best for you to take. Need any help, email me. I can train you.
Like Minky said, weight training works too.
