How many of you (men & women) over 50 have been contact by scammers?

Just curious. The system administrator for this site has cancelled messages in my mailbox from five different men just this week, because they were suspected scammers (or not following the rules). What is it with these men and women, do they think we are more vulnerable?

I don't get very many messages from scammers. I get them now and then but it's a very small percentage.

They probably think because we're "over the hill" that we are more desperate than the younger women. NOT! We're wiser.

Buyer beware.....if they give you an email address report um...MD kicks them off within hours.

Just remember that for every one you see, probably hundreds of others are receiving those emails too, of all ages. After awhile it's so automatic, I open the message, scan for an email address, and as soon as I see it, I hit Report Spam, then Delete.

It's not an age related thing, although sometimes it seems different ones use different approaches according to what they choose from the search criteria menu. For you, SuzieQ, it might be that you have "Christian" listed. (They can be ever so "holy" while attempting to scam ) I know for me, there have been phases when they obviously target anyone who lists themselves as "widowed". Sometimes it's just whoever is online or whoever posts a new picture. Sometimes they're "targeting", sometimes it's just random.

It's rampant all over the internet. At least here they have the "report spam" button and with everybody working together, they don't last very long. I do exactly the same thing Heaven does. Once in awhile I'll read the whole letter just for grins, but normally it's simply "report/delete".

I get at least 1 or 2 almost every day. Usually just report them and then block.

Greywolf, I have been getting one or two a day too. I also, report and block, but I was just wondering if everyone had this problem, because I haven't been on this site very long. I guess I didn't realize that there were so many of them.

Usually one or two for me too - if I'm online more, I get more of them. It's interesting seeing how much more plausible some have gotten, while others are sooooooo bad it's ludicrous (especially the ones who can't seem to decide which gender they are...female name looking for a man, with a male profile, etc.)

I find that if I've been on recently, I get more of the "send me your email/phone number" scammers. Thank you, no, report.

Got one recently from a man who "saw my picture and just felt something special" Yeah right, I don't even have a photo posted! Talk about lazy! He couldn't even be bothered to check out who he was sending that nonsense to. Happens on a regular basis. Like the others say, just report and ignore it.

I definitely think it has a lot to do with how often you are online at MD. I mean, it's a whole lot easier to sell somebody a line of goods if they are already in the shop.

I get one or two messages a week and most are women from China. They almost always want me to reply to their email address instead of on the site here.

I still get emails from scammers, the mods are right on top of things though, they delete these people's accounts soon after.

I just joined and I've gotten two already! Don't know if it has anything to do with age though.

I don't know how they select their potential victims but I was getting slammed with them for several weeks until my daughter told me of the Romancescams Yahoo group. It helped me to spot the scammers before they wasted my time and I reported them as soon as I suspected them. I also changed some of the wording in my
profile and left out words like lonely & widow which helped too.
Did you know that you can have up to 8 alternate screennames on Yahoo? I found out when I would get requests from one name to IM and their picture was being used on a different screenname but if you report it to yahoo they will remove all associated names. Maybe this info will help someone.
