I know of a few people still active in sports, and when you hit the 5-0, your body is telling you - it ain't so young anymore. Such that you are likely prone for some serious accidents, if you don't watch out, and be more careful, etc.

I play a lot of volleyball - and I note the usual injuries that arise in this fun and funny sport. It is either a broken ankle (twisted - either at the net, stepping on someone else's foot, or slipping approaching the net) or injured fingers (usually by using a rock hard volleyball) whereby you contact the volleyball inappropriately, which easily happens when the volleyball is travelling so fast at times, etc.

While these two kinds of injuries do happen all the time - they are entirely preventable or can be minimised. They of course, are not age related at all, but you are more fragile as you grow older, and you will probably take longer to heal?
Wearing proper ankle support sports shoes (like basketball boots, or anything that covers your ankles - will provide sufficient protection) does make a world of difference, should an injury occur. As too proper treatment at the time of injury (the so called ICE method - to apply Ice, Compression, and Elevation --- and to properly bandage the ankle securely, so that the bandage will provide the support, which your ankle can't - while it heals). Nothing can take the pain away, when you injure your ankle for the very first time. You just have to grin and bear it.
For fingers - if you use a lightweight volleyball, like Mikasa's VUL500 Training Series volleyball with the right air pressure (too much air makes it hard, you need to be able to press your thumbs into the volleyball about 2mm such that it will act like an 'airbag' instead of a rock) - it makes a world of difference, and is much more fun to play with - you can easily add spins to the volleyball, making for very funny moments in gameplay. This volleyball won't seriously injure you at all, when you make inappropriate contact with it, say on your finger joints - whereas with a hard volleyball, would...

One 50 something volleyball player suffered with his achilles tendon snapping on him. He does play basketball too. Anyway this particular injury does happen often enough - although you may not have heard about it before? This is a very serious injury, such that it will take around 5 months to completely heal. The first 2? months are especially very hard, as you are strapped up in a very uncomfortable position for the first month? There is no way to speed up the recovery process. You will get warning signs, about this, before it gives way on you... so be warned.

I've had the unfortunate situation of being present, when a volleyball player collapsed and died on court. He was 55 and diabetic. He wasn't a regular volleyball player as such, and wanted to get back into it.

Anyway - I do recomend playing sports to remain active and fit.
To not overdo it, should you start up from being inactive toward being active.
To do it slowly and surely - and you should do fine.
Beware of what possible injuries result, and take the precautions to play your chosen sport safely.

i still jog 4-7 miles a week, and play softball in the summer. now, i have been doing these things for 30 years, so my joints are used to it. no knee problems at all. sometimes, i need a little aleve! and i may be a little stiff. but, if i stop, i'll gain 50 pounds!

the key for me is good shoes, and, knowing my limits. i jog, not run. it's slow, but it's a jogging pace. and i can turn a triple into a double! i am the oldest on the team. and i catch "grief" from my teammates, most in their 30's. but, they hope they can play when they reach 50! and, i never slide!!!

If you have been exercising all your life then you should just take the normal precautions...You must watch for pulling muscles so stretching is ALWAYS recommended

I exercise every other day at the gym, and the days we don't go, we take walks. I love tennis, I played last year. My doctor says it's fine, but sometimes I still feel like a kid and have to think twice before doing strenuous exercise, the body is more fragile as we age.

After 3 hip surgeries, my doctor has told me, if it hurts, don't do it! Some days my joints are so sore I can hardly walk. On good days, I walk about 1/2 mile after a full day of being on my feet at school trying to keep up with my 2nd graders. I have several exercise videos that I do occasionally but I really love to walk.

I do agree, that you need to warm up before engaging fully in that sport or activity.
Give your body time to warm up, slowly at first...

You body tells you if there is anything wrong. Like one time, I overdid it with too much activity, and my back gave way. Luckily being totally bedridden for 5 days cured it. I know better next time - hopefully. As I cannot afford to do that again...

I love taking walks, it's great exercise, plus I love walking amongst nature and now that the leaves have changed, it's a very pretty walk.

Right you are Painter....I have a little nugget for my teams for just that...it goes:
"you have to melt the ice cube before you can drink the water"
Always do a easy run,jog for like 5 minutes BEFORE you stretch.......my teams have been doing that for years and so far ..so good!
