Too many workers, so few jobs

I have been checking the job ads daily, in my area, there are so few in Connecticut for clerical workers, about 3 in the next town over from me, this is getting ridiculous. Even if you are educated and have computer skills, the jobs are just not there, it's definitely not like it was in the late 60s when jobs were prevalent, times have changed so much. It is plain discouraging. I received a rejection letter today for a job which I was not even interviewed for, yet I was qualified for the position, I had the skills they desired and the experience, go figure. I even went in person to apply for that one.

I just started applying to jobs on the Senior web sites, somehow some way I will find something, I'm not giving up yet. I'm even willing to take part time if it means money in my pocket.

I totally understand. I have been trying to get a job with the VA in Indiana because I would enjoy working with VETS. However, It seems pretty difficult to get my foot in the door but like you I will not give up.

I went for an interview for a job in town and believe me, there is absolutely nothing in this town for anyone who doesn't have family living here. I didn't get it but the lady doing the hiring told my aunt (who works there and was probably the reason I got an interview to begin with) that there were 50 applications and they only ran the ad a few days. 50 might not be that much for a larger city, but for a town like Connersville, that's a huge amount of applications. I also had an interview to be an interviewer for a new automotive plant coming to Indiana. There were 50,000 applications for 2000 jobs. 20,000 were eliminated by the computer but the other 30,000 other applicants still had to be interviewed over the phone. I should have gotten the job to do that but I evidently didn't. I'm pretty sure I'm one of the 50,000 who applied for the 2000 jobs too. It's getting very discouraging especially since I have no income now. I'm beginning to suspect age discrimination but there's no way you can prove it and there are so many applicants for so few jobs. I'm not sure where they come up with unemployment statistics but they obviously have no basis in reality whatsoever. I do know that when you run out of UI, you're no longer counted as being unemployed and that when you take a part-time job when you really want a full-time job, you're also no longer counted.

I'm so sorry JZ and Candylily you are unemployed as well. It is so discouraging out there. I also feel it could be age discrimination. Even though companies do not ask your age, they can still tell we are older. I know you are right, we are not counted as unemployed if we take a part time job even though we want a full time one, you are so right. I also don't have any unemployment compensation, that ran out, this is so hard right now. (((Hugs)))

As long as there are too many people, any kind of discrimination will do. Technology requires fewer people to do the same work. As long as the population continues to grow anyway, more people will be unemployed. "Be fruitful and multiply," and see what happens.

Here it is February, I have had just 2 job interviews, one place was choosing between me and one other out of 300 applicants, but I still didn't get it. At least I am getting closer to finding something. I feel so frustrated though.

...Has anyone considered self employment? Everyone has talents that are marketable.

...It may not be a get rich quick, but absent of the costs incurred to be employed; driving, clothes, time, etc. and with the tax deductions that may offset any spousal income, or losses carried back to recoup your own past taxes, as well as forward to offset any future, the net amount can define self employment as a viable option.

...Meantime, take advantage of any state or federal programs to further your education and since you are on here, everyone has an internet connection that allows online classes; many of which are free or very little.

...Having been self employed most of my life, sitting around and waiting for someone else to choose me over friends, relatives, younger, more attractive, etc. appears to be counter productive, if not ludicrous.

...Other than "acts of God," destiny is either controlled by your, or someone else's actions, or both and only you can decide.

...With 10 to 20% of the work force being Illegal Immigrants and growing, don't expect this employment issue to become any better. Each displaced job by same, moves the displaced person into another sector and it simply snowballs.

...Maybe it is time to think ouside of the box.

You may have to consider moving to another part of the country where jobs are more plentiful... like the millions of people that are.
