.. to help a person regain health/fitness, what would it be?
I would say, buy old fashioned or steel-cut oats (groats) and have it for breakfast every day.

don't jump into to just any ol' program....its like when one goes swimming in a lake peeps naturally sample the water by putting a toe or hand in first then they ease themselves in totally. One needs to like their exercise routine ...elsewise they tend to see it as drudgery and forsake it soon after they start. I used to be a personal fitness trainer and I know what one needs.I now am a coach at a high scool out here in CA.

Go for a walk, even if it's just out to the mailbox at first, just keep doing as much as you can, and keep extending it.

I'm with Heaven on this one. I love to walk however due to many physical problems it's hard for me to walk for very long. I try to walk for 15-20 min at least 3 times a week. Our park now has a new walking trail and the whole thing is 1/2 mile. Some days I can do more, some days less but I at least get out and try. I also keep 5 lb weights at my computer desk and lift wts when waiting for the puter to warm up.
I don't think it's necessarily the amount of exercise you do, it's the willingness to try.

If you plan to exercise, pick something that you enjoy doing. Lots of people plan to make changes, with the best of intentions, but if you don't enjoy what you are doing, then you are much less likely to do it.

^^^^ I have to agree there too, but I'd like to add something to it - don't be afraid to try something different. My son talked me into trying weight lifting with a friend of his as my trainer (who specialized in Superslow training), at the age of 58. I got a heck of a surprise when a lifetime of back trouble became history in a matter of weeks, and what's more I found I really enjoyed it. When I moved here four years ago, I found another Superslow trainer, so it's been 6 years of being pretty much back pain-free. As with anything, start small and see how far you can go...nobody swims the English channel on their first try, or runs a marathon. And with weights, at least at the beginning, find a good trainer to show you how to set yourself up so you don't hurt yourself.
Best results in getting yourself healthier are generally found to be a combination of strength and cardio, on alternating days.

I went to the doctor today with back pain and pain in my hip he says I have Degenerative Spondylolisthesis.. pretty fancy word. It pretty much means that there was a foward slippage of one vertabre onto another. All I know is it hurts. Excercize is good for it though.. so off to Physical therapy I go.
Getting older is a bitch for sure. My list of ailments are growing and yet I feel like a teenager

Its amazing how many on here make 50 seem like its a life of pain, being overweight, unhealthy...back trouble, hip trouble....
I personally think people as they get older use these aches and pains as a excuse not to exercise and get lazy and overweight.
Get in the water and workout...get off your butts and walk , Im not talking a slow walk...move it.... I may get people who will not agree with me, but I really think people use excuses.
And Dove...............degenerative spondy is what ALOT of people have, and with PT and a water exercise program...you really should be fine....I have worked with hundreds of patients with this.....its pretty much a natural thing that can happen as you age,

Meditation......frees the mind, calms the soul and lightens the heart...once you have those three in peaceful unison, taking care of the physical becomes easier.

I do water exercises every summer for at least 3 months. I wish I could keep it going but the nearest pool is nearly 30 miles away. I tried one year, but it took a total of 3 hours, getting there, doing the exercises and coming home, all after work. I just couldn't keep up with it. I also joined a fitness club after my first and 2nd hip surgeries. I worked out for nearly 3 years. But the strain of the machines forced me into another surgery. So now I limit the exercise to walking and some DVDs I have that are mainly walking moves.

Health and fitness don't have ONE single factor and a lifetime of enjoying bad habits like being overweight, smoking, excerise and not easy to fix and no ONE single thing will fix them, esp something in a box or bottle.
Some things people should be doing is no smoking drink alcohol in moderation have safe sex get excersise several times a week have a good mental outlook, make meaningful relationships in the real world have money in the bank and stay out of debt be sure you have a good doctor and health care

Cut out all processed foods, esp the white stuff, like flour, sugar, rice and anything made from those processed 'foods' including bread and pasta.

I'd get a baseline checkup first and foremost. Have your doctor do bloodwork to see where there might be a problem. And then, embark on a more sensible eating program.

Cut out all processed foods, I have this rule that if there's an ingredient I can't pronounce in something, it's not for me!!
